Great one tonight.  They tested how far underwater you need to be to be safe from bullets

9mm - 8 feet

12 gauge slug - 5 feet?  (blew tank)

.223 FMJ - 2 feet

.30-06 - 3 feet

.50 cal AP - about 3 feet

Only one thing, they only shot from one distance muzzle to the waters surface.
Obviously the lower velocity bullet isnt going to break up as easily...thus dont you think a .223/.30 or .50 is going to penetrate further if fired further from the waters surface?..

They sure didnt consider that

They also don't factor in diffraction - the object in the water isn't where you "see" it's at.

Episode 34: Bulletproof Water

How deep must you dive to survive a gunshot? Adam and Jamie are on the case, unleashing their arsenal of pistols, shotguns and supersonic rifles to find the answer. Then the guys join forces with the MythBuilders in some playground pandemonium as they test a myth straight from the schoolyard. If you push hard enough, can you get a swing to go all the way around the swing-set bar? Everyone's tried this at some point in their lives, but this time there's a difference: On MythBusters, failure is not an option; if at first you don't succeed, then add some high explosives!

Watching it the second time the bipod on the AR-50 appears to be on backwards (the first time they pull it out of the box in the shop)!

The 9mm 8 foot result was from a straight down shot.  They abandoned that test method when the tank blew out from the shotgun.

Everything broke up within 3 feet from the 30 degree angle tests. Including the 50 bmg.

They were testing if you jumped into the water getting away from a fire fight if you were actually safe like in movies.

As long as your are at-least 3 feet down and they are shooting from shore at a 30deg angle then you are fairly safe that is until you need to breath.
