Great one tonight. They tested how far underwater you need to be to be safe from bullets 9mm - 8 feet 12 gauge slug - 5 feet? (blew tank) .223 FMJ - 2 feet .30-06 - 3 feet .50 cal AP - about 3 feet |

Obviously the lower velocity bullet isnt going to break up as easily...thus dont you think a .223/.30 or .50 is going to penetrate further if fired further from the waters surface?.. They also don't factor in diffraction - the object in the water isn't where you "see" it's at.

The 9mm 8 foot result was from a straight down shot. They abandoned that test method when the tank blew out from the shotgun. Everything broke up within 3 feet from the 30 degree angle tests. Including the 50 bmg. They were testing if you jumped into the water getting away from a fire fight if you were actually safe like in movies. As long as your are at-least 3 feet down and they are shooting from shore at a 30deg angle then you are fairly safe that is until you need to breath. |
