Everyone I know has a Mormon neighbor or two that make no effort to conceal their great efforts to have vast amounts of stored food on hand.

I never thought to ask the one guy I knew was an LDS member, so I throw it to the hive mind.

Why?

Follow up:  do they also make other SHTF preparations?  Weapons?

they believe a one year famine will come over the earth - or that's what i've been told.

Part of their church tenets (or maybe more social than religious) is to have a years worth of food on hand to weather the tough times.

I think that's been discussed over in the survival forum.

FWIW, I believe "the bad times" might come someday too.

Why do Mormons Store Food?

In case they get hungry.

No, that's my point.  I do it because it seems prudent, I want to be prepared, not because of anything related to my religeous beliefs or church teachings.  I'm NOT questioning the wisdom of the practice.

I just want to know the basis for such a high prevalence of Mormons deciding to do it.

There are Mormons on this board.

They are best equipped to answer this question.

I admire Mormon society to a degree.

That's tempered by them makeing up a book of the bible

They are used to being hammered on.

If the worst comes to worst, I promise you UT will be Ok.

I may head there myself if it comes to that.

They suffered severe crop damage due to a grasshopper "plague" shortly after arriving in the Salt Lake Valley.  The only thing that apparently prevented a total loss was the arrival of seagulls that gorged on the grasshoppers to the extent they couldn't fly.  That's why they store food and why they chose the seagull as their state bird.

We have been councilled by our church leaders to have a store of food sufficent for our families for one year.  It is not because we believe that there will be some famine of biblical proportions or something, it is because we should be prepared for bad times, whether it be a natural disaster or a lost job.  I'd like to take it a step further and have a year's supply of ammo on hand, but I don't know where I'd put 250,000 rounds

don't worry
so i tell you don't worry about the food or drink you need to live, or about the clothes you need for your body, life is more than food and the body is more than clothes, 26 look at the birds in the sky. they don't plant or harvest or store food in barns, but your heavenly father feeds them. and you know your worth much more than birds. 27. you cannot add anytime to your life by worring about it.

i read this directly from the bible. the lord told me one day that God is a living god. not the god of the dead but of the living.

I once talked to a buddy of mine about this.  He said the church elders will often ask the younger folks how they are coming with their "year's supply," almost like it is some kind of an ongoing  project.

He also mentioned that it dates back to the time when the Mormons took on the US Army one brutal winter in some kind of a stand-off in Utah.

Beats the shit out of having to go to your church for a donation, hat in hand, when hard times hit...

Personally, I keep a year's worth of food because the only person I can count on for my welfare and well-being is myself. Katrina proved that. What would the Sheeple do if there was a nationwide trucker's strike? Foods don't grow in the back of the supermarket.... What if the power went out for 2 or 3 weeks? It was 4 days for a lot of us in MI when the power went out along the east 2 years ago-that was a MAJOR event for some people. Scared the shit out of me, got me moving towards being self-sufficient..

Dave

BTW: We'd love to have y'all visit us in the Survival forum, fine group of guys who are willing to share info. Just leave the GD stuff in GD is all we ask!

About how do you calculate how much food you'd need for a year?
