That would be The shit missed the fan. I got a call from my MIL saying my FIL was late getting home that she expected him home from the ranch a few hours before and she hasn't seen or heard from him. I told her I would go out and look for him. There has been several robberies out at and near our ranch so I wanted to be prepared but most likely worse case scenario was something heavy fell on him or he had some type of stroke/heart of attach [FIL is 80 and has had a quadruple bipass but is in pretty good health]. I grabbed my first aid kit, my rifle and searched for a few magazines found one filled and 2 empties. I grabbed a canister of 1000 rounds and the empty mags and headed out to the ranch trying to prepare myself for the worse case scenario. The ranch is about 30 miles from my house so it takes a bit to get out there. Its not a road you can drive 60 on by any means, particularly when you're trying to load magazines on the way out. I got out to the place and my heart sank. The lights were on at the house. The door was wide open. His pick up was no where in site but the shop was left open. No way in heck would he leave the place in such a disarray. I slammed a magazine in my rifle while driving down the drive way and immediately placed one in the chamber when I parked and got out. I grabbed my mag light and worked my way to the shop trying to be very stealth like. Of course I have no training so I stumbled over a few objects and probably could have been detected if using ultra radar or something. I rounded the corner towards the shop with my heart racing a million miles a minute when all of the sudden I hear "What's going on here?" I swing around and there's my FIL laughing at me. I stopped and tried to give my stomach a change to go back down to somewhere other than up next to my uvula. Evidently his pick up broke down. He had it torn apart in the shop and was waiting for someone to come get him. All was fine. I didn't get to shoot anyone but I was prepared to damn it. I'm sure I made a gazillion mistakes but anyway, I got him home safely which was the purpose of my mission. Patty |
Searching for mags? Empty magazines? What are these conditions of which you speak? |
|
Hahaha. Plus 1 on the empty mags! Glad everything was ok ... |

I keep a pair of Galati mag pouches loaded at all times. Each pouch holds SIX 30 rnd USGI mags. Each in its own pocket, with a velcro flap, shoulder strap. These sit in my closet by my house gun (CAR-15). www.galatiinternational.com The pouch you want is GLMP30, $20 each. www.galatiinternational.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=GIO&Product_Code=GLMP30&Category_Code=Magazinepouches |

Actually you guys are right - it was a good learning situation for me and my FIL [I hope he's learned not to sneak up on me when I'm in Ubber Tachnical mode again either!] There is no cell coverage where I live or 30 miles out at the ranch. I did bring my cell phone with me as about 5 miles on top of the hill towards town there is cell coverage and if I needed to call an ambulance I could. Thankfully, nothing was wrong. Patty |
That's a great visual!Next time, try to remember to do as I do and wear your midnight-door-kicker ninja SWAT costume. Jist goin' in blastin' is another advanced techique also. Glad everyone was okay. I hate doing the neighborhood walkarounds at O-dark thirty. But I learn something every time. ETA: were you wearing a shirt? Sorry, just in all the pics I've seen with you with a rifle...

You need a "Grab and go can" I keep a .50 call ammo can with four loaded 30 round mags in a G.I four pocket bandoleer. It also has four of the 7 pocket bandoleers fully loaded with a clip guide pinned to each one. It also has a G.I. cleaning kit in a belt pouch. Then there is a loaded 30 round mag with my rifle in the safe. I have a similar set up for all my sport utility rifles and a few of my pistols. The cans are seperated from my other ammo cans and clearly marked, It's all part of the master plan. |
Thats an excellent idea. I'll get on it right away. After Christmas I'll buy a first aid kit for each rig too. I need to practice with the flashlight and the rifle too. What the heck, the neighbors think I'm nuts anyway. geerhed you work that mental image for all its worth. I won't disappoint you and say I was wearing jeans, boots and a jacket. Patty |
Boy no kidding. I"m just glad the worst things going through my head weren't real!Actually the pick up's a joke. The only reason I didn't think that he was stranded because of his pick up was because there's always 2-3 trucks out there that run but after the last robbery he took the wheels off the trucks and brought them in to his house so those wouldn't get stolen! ![]() Anyway, he drives an old beat up Volkswagon pick up that looks like a little green turd. About 6 months ago the dang thing caught fire while he was driving in it and was completely distroyed. Evidently the insurance gave him just enough money for it that he could restore it. Why he just doesn't buy a new pick up is beyond me. He's so tight he squeeks! Patty |

Patty Your Dad and mine are obviously related, we must be cousins. We finally made him quit driving at age 86.
