Short of a full auto MP5 I really have everything I need so I was going to tell everybody in lieu of getting me a xmas present to donate to a charity. The United Way is out because I damn sure don't want money going to an organization that thinks homosexual's should be in charge of a boy scout troop. I much prefer an organization that does something for our troops and their families. One that doesn't use $.99 of every dollar for "administrative costs". Thanks!!!! |

Shriners? Pediatric AIDS Foundations? NRA? Oh, I just saw your preference: www.specialops.org/ |
+1! The Shriners are a great route too Realizing that there are little ones dealing with cancer keeps my personal problems in perspective. Helping them (The Shriners) or the make-a-wish foundation or the Ronald MacDonald house is a great way to go. |

Beat me to it! |
| Each year, my buddy and I take a group of kids from the local orphanage to a sporting event, or the circus if it's in town, all expenses paid. The kids don't get out much, and they usually love every minute of it. Big organizations waste too much money, and this is one way to see that my money is a least bringing some joy to someone, and not being pissed away on the frivolous bureaucratic BS associated with large charities. |

A very good organisation IMO. I always try to leave a few bucks when I've flown and used their facilities, especially if I grabbed a cup of coffee or a donut. They also do a lot to help troop morale. Look into veterans groups, DAV, VFW, AMVETS, American Legion. I don't knowi f they take donations or not though. As a cancer survivor, I'm biased towards cancer research groups. The Salvation Army is good. Do you know any federal employees or military members (Regular Army as they are federal employees)? They can get the CFC (Combined Federal Campaign) booklet that lists the charities, and how much of each dollar is used for what, admin, advertising, actual programs, etc. Good info. |

Mercy Corps. Something like 90+% of what you give goes to the cause, rather than "administrative overhead". I've never heard a bad word about them. The United Way was re-named "New United Way" after bad PR from their head guy using cash for pesonal largess. Probably hasn't changed much, & they seem to be a PC popularity-charity w/ high overhead & big ad budgets. |
| Find someone from this board that is in Iraq and send monthly packages of goodies to them.... I have been sending stuff over to Iraq. We got a couple of soldiers from Adopt a soldier or something like that... It's been a great experience for me... I know that every cent I spend is going in that package and not in some CEO's pocket!!! |
