I've been getting low memory messages frequently, and the system would automatically increase the paging file.  Being a technoloser, about the only thing I knew to do was reboot more frequently.
If I had Firefox running, plus Outlook Express and Windows Media Player, I'd last about 3 hours before getting the low memory message.
Following the directions in a recent "Firefox Suck!" thread, I went out and bought a 256 K RAM stick. I installed it, booted up, and lasted about 5 minutes before Firefox failed and then the computer spontaneously rebooted. This computer has had overheating problems from day 1, but I have been able to keep it under control using a small fan. I had never seen it get so unstable so fast before, though.
I took it apart and pulled the new RAM stick and it is functioning properly now.
What now?

The two sticks are apparently not the same. I do not know what the various numbers mean, so I'll ask at work tomorrow.

256k??
No DF, you mean 256 MegaBytes.
256kilobytes was alright for DOS back in 1981.

Spend the bucks and get 2 ram modules of 512MB each
for a total of 1 GigaByte of ram.
Make sure they are 2-2-2 CAS latentcy, so you will have
maximum memory bandwidth usage efficiency.
That translates to a faster comp.

Cheap memory is just that.
Cheap.
Stay away from it.

Have you run Spybot, Adaware, and CWShredder?

Mine acted somewhat like this and it turned out to be some adware/spyware that would reinstall itself in the registry after being deleted, unless you started in safemode then ran an Adaware extra from their site that was specifically for that problem.

I use Opera browser, no memory leaks that I can notice.

Paging file as in swap file as in virtual memory?  Thats on your harddrive.  Perhaps your harddrive is full?  Scanned and defraged the harddrive lately?

I manualy set the swap file size so the operating systems doesn't keep messing with it.  It hesitates everytime it resizes it.

Shok

I run Spybot and Adaware, but haven't heard of CWShredder before.  I'll try the above tonight.

I scan and defrag every week or so.  The rest of what you said is technojibberish.

I don't know jack about computers, but after experiencing the same problem, I defragged my
hard drive and now it runs like a clock. <shrug>

Same guy who made CWShredder (merjin.org) also has HijackThis. It's a registry analysis tool that is used to identify potential malicious things on your system through the registry. You have to be careful because you can blow away good things you want to keep. There's a lot of tech sites though where you can post your hijackthis logfile and people will look at it to make recommendations on if you have any potential bad critters in your system.

Critters was my first thought when I read your post.

Good point.  They do (merjin transferred it to another outfit) recommend cleaning with the other ones mentioned already before posting your log, so there's less crap to wade through.   CWShredder is for various critters related to "Cool Windows", I think.   I stupidly got sucked into some cursor crapola, myself.

I just got done yesterday reloading everything on my xp equipped e machine. Got to the point where it would "blue screen" and reboot in an endless cycle every 2 minutes. I suspect that my daughter was downloading all kind of crap before I: finally passworded it. By that time it was too late-
