I like the ability to give the shotgun a little punch.
But, I prefer the XM109 25mm Payload Rifle for the majority of similar uses.

Yes, but 12 gauge is cheap enough to be issued en-masse, what else is, any soldier can get his hands on a 12ga (I'm sure getting issued a few of those rounds wouldn't be a problem if they start producing them en-masse), unlike a 25mm special-purpose rifle and ammo.

That's just a protorype. I'd bet a mass-produced version would be very much stamped. I was thinking with looks like those of a scaled-down 2.75-inch FFAR (with the little fins stuffed into the shell-casing, in the powder).

I want to see a gel test.  Bet the wound channel is impressive, although I doubt this round will merely wound anyone it hits.

Really?
1.  The article mentions detonation of mines and improvised explosives.  Spot on for the XM109.   That's one of the reasons it was developed.
2.  Disabling of a vehicle engine?  I'd rather have the XM109.

However, I already agreed that adding punch to cheap and very common weapon (shotgun) is a good idea.
