I am in the market for a handheld gps unit
The function i am looking for is something i can have in my car and use ifor nav/mapping while driving
but also when i go up into the great wooded abyss which is northern maine
any help would be appreciated

A Garmin GPSmap60 will do all that.  I have one that I like alot.  If you upgrade the map you can get turn by turn directions for driving.

Garmin is the name to beat in this space. Currently I'm running a Garmin GPS76 and I use MapTech for mapping my waypoints and tracks on my computer.

I've got an eMap that's racked up over 300,000 miles on it's odometer.

I've worn out the external power hookup, AND the springs in the battery compartment.

I've gotten my money worth.
