Dear Violence Policy Center Action Network Member:

Last Friday, by a vote of 65 to 31, the U.S. Senate passed S. 397, a bill
shielding the gun industry from certain types of civil litigation.  Click here
to see the Reuters story on the vote which cites the VPC:

http://today.reuters.com/news/newsArticle.aspx?type=politicsNews&storyID=2005-07-29T234038Z_01_N29544354_RTRIDST_0_POLITICS-CONGRESS-GUNS-DC.XML

Thank you to everyone who called and e-mailed their Senators to urge them to
vote against this bill.  To see how your Senators voted, click here:

The bill will now move to the U.S. House of Representative--which has passed
similar legislation in the past--for action.  Following Senate passage Friday,
the VPC stated:

"This bill is built on a corrupt foundation of lies that will leave a legacy of
pain and suffering.  Proponents claimed that the bill was necessary to protect
our armed forces from having to buy their guns from foreign manufacturers--but
the bulk of U.S. military and law enforcement sidearms already come from foreign
gunmakers. They claimed that the gun industry is the most heavily regulated
industry in America when, in fact, they are one of only two industries exempt
from federal health and safety regulation.  They claimed that it's an industry
in distress, yet their own financial documents prove otherwise.  Today's vote is
a go-ahead by the U.S. Senate for a reckless, cynical, unregulated industry to
sell their increasingly lethal products at tremendous cost to the general
public."

While disappointed with the outcome of the Senate vote, we will continue to work
with our supporters in the House of Representatives to expose the true NRA/gun
industry agenda driving this bill.

Thank you, again, for all of your efforts.

Lot of facts there

They claimed that the gun industry is the most heavily regulated
industry in America when, in fact, they are one of only two industries exempt
from federal health and safety regulation.

You mean OSHA has no authority over the gun industry? BS   I know they came down on glock after a guy was killed in the GA plant.

Honestly, what was their reason to stop this bill? I mean we all know that theyd rather blame the gun manufacturer for a crime using their gun, but how did they explain it to their flock? I mean youd think even sheep would realize trying to stop this bill is completely moronic, so how did the VPC spin it to make it look like the bill would hurt the children?

their reason to stop the bill is that about 1/2 of their time and effort go into these lawsuits...it's their raison d'etre, as the Froggies say.  I bet ol' Mike Barnes is shittin' himself right about now.

I have a friend who was killed by a drunk driver. Does this mean that we get to sue Chevrolet?
