Man Accused Of Throwing Bride Off Cliff

Scheduled To Be Arraigned Thursday

Jul 28, 2005 7:56 am US/Pacific
LOS ANGELES (AP) A man accused of throwing his bride off a 200-foot-high cliff after being married for only two weeks has been arrested.

Brandon Manai, 23, of Torrance, was arrested July 7 and was being held without bail. He was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday.

The body of Julia Cuevas Rosas, 24, of Norwalk, was found July 3 by fishermen at the bottom of a cliff in Rancho Palos Verdes, authorities said.

Although the couple had been married for a short time, investigators believe that Rosas approached Manai about a divorce or an annulment that may have led to her death, said Sgt. Robert Taylor of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department homicide bureau.

In the days before her death, Rosas had complained to friends and co-workers about her husband's possessiveness, constant phone calls and text messages to her cellphone, Taylor said. He added that she had also begun asking friends about how to annul her marriage.

"We can only speculate as to what happened to cause such a terrible and heinous act to occur, and it seems from the investigation that what keeps coming up is the spur-of-the-moment marriage," Taylor said.

The couple began dating in March and wed June 19 but maintained separate residences, authorities said.

Manai was on parole for violating a restraining order filed against him in 1999 by his then-girlfriend in San Jose. Manai began harassing her shortly after she broke off their relationship, detectives said.

Authorities said they believed that Rosas may have suffered a miscarriage before her marriage to Manai, who may have been the father.

"We are seeking hospital records to further confirm, but we do know she wasn't (pregnant) at the time of death," Taylor said.

To the Rosas family.  I'm very sorry for your loss but what they hell did you do to your daughter when she was little that made he likely to marry a parolee with a history of violence towards women?

I know it's wrong, but for some reason I got kind of a warm fuzzy feeling when I read the title of the thread.

Asshat doesn't understand that both people have to go over to make the whole "Lovers' Leap" thing happen. He should have gone first to show her how to do it right.

I'm betting that she spent 2 weeks strait talking about all of her ideas about how he could work harder to make her happy so their marriage would work.

I feel like  total idiot. I thought it said Bridge not Bride. I was ready to read a light hearted story about some guy tossing his dental prosthetic off a cliff and hitting a park ranger with it. Or something like that.

That's a little extreme don't you think? The poor guy was MARRIED for Christ's sake. Show some sympathy.

"Til death do us part" must have been literal to the bozo.  He should have jumped instead of throwing her off the cliff.
