I was walking by the Sushi bar at the place I work and started craving some Tuna Tataki, and I wondered, how many arfcommers eat sushi... Poll Coming

I'd eat sushi if it were cooked Battered and deep fried (see Brohawk's post below, that sounds good!).

Absolutely love it.

Question?  I always thought sushi was raw fish (tuna) with rice, the actual dish being called sushi.

Sushimi is actually plain old, raw fish.

Is this correct?

I know it is not "traditional" sushi, but mine has to be either vege or cooked.

That said, it's da bomb!

Sushi refers to the method of preparing the rice. Most 'sushi' is a combination of thusly prepared rice, fish, vegetables, and so on.

One of my favorite rolls from the local sushi place is a crab/shrimp/avocado roll, battered and deep fried, then topped with QP mayo and a couple of other condiments. Awesome!

Sashimi is the fish by itself

sushi can be a hand roll or cut roll, cut being the little round things, hand roll is like a seaweed funnel filled with the stuff.

I have previously stated that there was no way I would eat that shit. I found a couple of what were reported as being top shelf sushi bars in Houston and that is about the only place I eat when I am there now. I had to ask how I was supposed do eat this stuff. A very nice Japanese waitress showed me some of the finer points.

There is a place in town.

They have the Ninja rolls.

Its shrimp, cucumber, salmon, and something else fried in tempura then wrapped.in rice and a chili sauce.

Hoo boy. I could eat 90 of those

Unagi is great too, as well as most of it.

Wow, I'm surprised how many people eat the stuff. I love it, and I used to be one of the "I'll never touch that shit' crowd. But since management gets to eat whatever they want at no cost, I figured I'd sample everything, turns out I love sushi.

I like the Tuna Tataki, Crunch Roll (crab, salmon, cream cheese tempura), volcano roll, spider roll and regular tuna roll myself.

Dumb question:

Do you have to like fish to enjoy
sushi. I was always told that "good
sushi" does not taste like fish. I
hate freshwater fish (trout, striper,
salmon, etc), but I have been known
to eat tuna steak.

Any advice?

Ya gots to have wusabi with it!

The first encounter I had with a California roll I thought the wusabi was avacado dip, so I smothered it on.  Ouch.

Now I eat Wusabi on everything, especially rice.

I think you will like it.

I will say that I thought I would ever eat the stuff.  Try the fried/cooked stuff first, then dabble in the tuna.

ETA:  I also like the ginger and wasabi on the rolls.  Oh, cannot forget the Ponzu (sp?) sauce!!!

Place in downtown Austin has the best roll I have ever eaten.  They start with tenderloin, and I think it has a spear of asperigas and a green onion.  They also have the best toro I have ever had there as well -  but good toro is just too cursed expensive.  Just loved getting great steak at a sushi place...

Decent sushi in general is just too expensive, but I still love the stuff.  Had sashimi Sunday, yumm

Course pie is not bad either...

My favorites would have to be tuna or salmon sushi. Octopus is a little rubbery, but good.

I love sushi as well.  I do not have many options for sushi in SE Ky however.

I'll make psuedo sushi (with imitation crab/cucumber/etc.) but it just isn't the same.

As somebody who dislikes fish, I'll give you some advice.

-Stay away from things like Salmon. Stick with Tuna, Mackerel, and the like. For fish, try to stay with Nigiri (not the rolls, the rice balls that have a strip of fish on top).
-Mix some of the wasabi (that's the green paste) with the shoyu (the soy sauce). Don't use much wasabi, it's very strong. Dip the sushi a little in the wasabi-shoyu mix. Eat it in one or two bites.
-Get some Kappa Maki (cucumber rolls) or other vegetable sushi as well, and don't be afraid of the ginger.
-The texture will be... wrong. It's gummy and doughy. Just a warning.

And if you don't like fish, stay away from the Miso soup. It's made with dried tuna flakes.

I used to hate it even tough I never tried it. I actually cant stand cooked fish. I have eaten worse things and figured before I die I will try anything except another animals genitals or internal organs.

I went with my at teh time super uber liberal hottie yoga girlfriend. I tried the standard California roll. not too bad, then a JB roll, pretty good. I went again and tried actual suchi instead of the rolls. I found that the white tuna is absolutely the best and is quite addictive.

Thig about sushi is. Its so fresh it doesnt taste like fish. I hate the smell of fish and the taste associated with cooked fish. Suchi has none of that. You can pick up a piece and smell it and you will smell nothing. But with some soy and wasabi, its tastes awesom. I even tried the Urchin once. Taste good but the consitency was nasty. I realized an urchin is really a clump of internal organs and it would have broke my rule anyways.

PS Tuna Takaki is right on. Think I will hit the all you can eat suchi place for lunch in an hour.

I get 6 pieces of white tuna. 1 piece dolphin. 1 piece, snapper, 1 piece marlin. I order of hot teryaki chicken, then a volcano roll (4pcs), then 2 pieces of shrimp, 4 more white tuna, then amiso soup, then tempura bannana for desert.

Yup I am goin right now.

I've only gotten food poisoning from "American" fish restaurants, never from Sushi and I've eaten at Sushi buffets!

I love it.

Unagi, Sashimi, Shrimp (can't remember what it's called, Salmon and rolls with lots of roe.

Volcano rolls can be awesome

Damn, now I'll have to have it for lunch
