If you don't have aloe, you can try vinegar.  It does not sting, does provide some cooling effect, toughens your skin (kind of like tanning hides in its effect); however, you will smell like a salad.

For many years we used vinegar in Hawaii for serious sunburn.  Aloe is better.

The make an Aloe product that looks like a blueish color and want to say it contains some kind of pain relief (*.caine?)  .....ironically its sold near the sun tan oil / products.
We usually keep it in the Fridge so that it is cold going on.  Or you can just put regular Aloe in the fridge as well.   It will also keep well refrigerated.

If you use Aloe, I have found that you have to continusely use it until the burn is healed. If you don't the skin will peel like a snake.

This may sound but the one thing I have found that works to take the sting out is to take a hot shower.  Start off with lukewarm water, then increase the hot water as much as you can stand. Do it at least twice a day. It also helps with the peeling.

I am not an expert but I did grow up on the beach in Florida and I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Drink LOTS OF WATER.  I think the worse part comes with the burn stops hurting, and starts itching.

Aloe vera with Lidocaine. Works wonders. Keep cool (refrig) between uses. Apply lightly. Wear lightweight clothes. Watch for blisters. Keep sunscreen on constantly (SPF 45 or better) when you go out. Wear a hat. Drink plenty of fluids. The sun's rays reflect off the water and act as a magnifyer.

Been there.
Done that.
I wear the hat and the t-shirt.

As a malignant melanoma survivor and dad of a 10 yo who just got 2nd degrees at camp (dispite my warnings and sunblock availability), Solarcaine still works well.  Even applying sunblock on the existing burn keeps it moist, gives it an air barrier and makes it feel 100% better.  Sorry man, sunburns suck!

Had a nasty burn on my shoulders. Whole sheets of skin were coming off. I blistered 3 or 4 times--it was horrible. Silvadene is the way to go. Noxema takes some of the sting out as well...
