"American Idiot" Just kidding. I don't really get my patriotism raised by hearing a song. Any song. On the subject of patriotic songs, though, a discrepancy I just noticed. It's kind of common around here to, when bands play the patriotic genre, along with God Bless America, the Star Spangled Banner, Stars and Stripes Forever, et cetera, to play the 1812 Overture. The 1812 Overture was written by Tchaikovsky. To celebrate Russian victory in the Napoleonic Wars. Not the American War of 1812. It has La Marsellaise and God Save the Tsar playing in the background, for god's sake. It. Is. Not. An. American. Song. So why does it get lumped with Sousa and Key's works? |
Love their music, hate their politics... For me, just about anything on THIS album will do. And part of each sale benefits the USO.

The Star-Spangled Banner, leading into Declaration Day, by the metal band Iced Earth... they do a KILLER "rock" version of the SSB. Rivals Hendrix's but remains true to the song. (if you're interested, the CD is "The Glorious Burden", tracks 1&2)

Me as well. But their music is fucking awesome, so I tend to overlook their politics somewhat.
