Who make the best one for under $150.00.

I was just going to install a depth gage but they run about 100.00 and you can get a sonar, water temp, depth all in one unit for under $200.00.

The two brands that seem to make a reliable product are Lorwance and Hummingbird.

Also how hard are they to install yourself.  It would be on a 23ft cobalt I/O.

Any info would be most appreciated from the HIVEMIND!

I've always liked the Hummingbird. My buddies dad had 3 different models over about 10 years in his little 14 foot aluminum boat and they all did great.

IMHO, Lowrance is better made and usually easier to use, but the Hummngbirds are cheaper, have more bells & whistles and have less expensive upgrade options.  If you are going to use it just for a depth finder, either will do the job.  Garmin is good, too.

Lowrance is better. But a Humminbird will work fine for depth and fish

What about the Lowrance X47...anyone have any experience with that model?

I've never used a lowrance. But I have been very happy with the hummingbirds that I have used.

for only $179.. can be had for less.. I highly recommend the Humminbird Matrix17  it is packed full of features including the ability to take 3 different attachments.. smartcast wireless receiver, barometric pressure sensor, and a gps receiver(theirs or your own existing gps with a cable)

It's a nice unit. we sell them on some of our boats. There are newer models out now but it performs admirably. The Hummingbirds are good too, but Ive always liked the Lowrance units. Actually, we just gave away an X47 as a prize.. I think they run about $130. I also have a Lowrance IFinder GPS and I love that too. They make good stuff.

I can get the x47 for about 120.00.

Will the hummingbird work with any gps.

And how hard is it to install these?  Any thing I need to pay particular attention to?

You guys are great...wonderful resource!

The wife is gonna be mad if you get fish scales/parts in her $40k Cobalt.

What color is yours?

BTW...don't most Cobalts come with a depth display from the factory?

(not a fish-finder, just a depth-readout...)

All work well,  I'd say Hummingbird  has the advantage when it comes to sheer amount of accessories and add-ons.

The only installation advice I'd give is to make sure that the transducer cable is separate from power lines, (static and interference) and that the trailer/swimladders etc. do not interfere with the external transducer.
