When Captain Miller said this in the film "Saving Private Ryan" he wasn't just talking to the Private James Francis Ryan. He was saying it to each of us. "Earn this." Think about it. "Earn this." And have a great day, making the most of our heritage of liberty given to us by those who came before and paid the price. Earn it. |
| Coming from a man who just gave his life for yours (as Miller and his men did for Ryan), "earn this " has some meaning. Coming from a faceless internet post, it's more than a little condescending. What makes you think you stand in a position to remind anyone to "earn" anything? What makes you think anyone you are directing your admonishment to isn't "earning it"? |
Post count. |
Relaxe Francis, he was trying to help you value and be grateful for your life. Sgat1r5 |

Sigh Hollywood - is there nothing you can't teach us? I did my time. Here's how it works: What you earn and what your get are two completely different things. I plan on earning one thing this 4oJ holiday. And that thing is: Shabutie! (and I won't be thinking of Tom Hanks when I do) |
+1. Who the hell is this guy to tell me to earn my life? I don't even know him. More than just a little condecending. |
| I think you guys might have missed the man's point. I don't think his tone was accusatory or condescending, he's just saying that maybe we should take a moment from time to time to think about the sacrifices others have made on our behalf. I do that anyway, as I'm sure others do. |

Golly, some of you guys are hypersensitive. It's a reminder to appreciate the sacrifice of those who have paid for our liberty with their blood. It's a reminder to cherish our liberty and make the most of the opportunities we are blessed with. If you are offended by these thoughts, you have a lot to learn in life. This adolescent reaction of "Don't tell me how to live my life!" shows how far you have to go. Pretty sad. |
I've got a wife and two kids for that. A few of my family members rest beneath white crosses. That's all I need to remind me of how I got where I am. I'm certainly not the only one on this board that can say that. My point is, for the majority of us here, he's preaching to the choir. Save it for the likes of DU. |
For the life of me, I just can't understand why you are so upset. Is there something here you disagree with? If you don't think what I said applies to you, then don't sweat it. I have a gut feeling that our thoughts on this topic are pretty similar. |
Maybe it was the message through a fictional character that set my mangina aflame. Regardless, I came off a little harsh. Please accept a humble apology. |

It's very inspiring.... to those who actually live by it. I suspect it would be far less inspiring to some fat crack whore buying Twinikies and cigarettes with food stamps on her way back to her government subsidized housing to beat her 6 kids after they get back from headstart. If everyone actually "earned it" this country would be a lot closer to what our forefathers envisioned it to be instead of the government sponsored cesspool it's fast becoming. |
This has got to be an AR15.com first. I want everybody to pay close attention. |
Nahhh, thats not condescending. "All of you idiots are worthless, None of yall deserve your lives, wtf dont yall get up off your lazy asses and SERVE your country and EARN what you have in blood sweat and tears rather than living off of the labor of REAL men, im betting not a single one of you children have served. Gawd I swear its because of people like yall that this country is going so badly." Now THAT is condescending. ![]()
