OK.  So my AC has been running (at least the fan part) non stop for 2 days.   I have the temp set to 80.    The air blowing out is not as cold as it usually has been.  Every once in awhile it seems like the air gets colder (maybe when the compressor kicks in and actuall starts to cool).

Now I do live in Phx., AZ.   And it is the summer.  But this is unusual to have the fan running constantly like this.

What's the diagnosis????

thanks in advance.

The fan switch is on 'ON'.  Instead of 'AUTO'?

" Welded " contact on the fan relay ?   Does the compressor cycle or does it also run continuosly ?

This thread should point you in the right direction.

clean the coils?

trash, bugs, and crap gets on the coils 'suffrocating' the unit

i use a garden sprayer filled w/ coil cleaner (kinda like winshield cleaner) on the unit and hose down w/ water hose (careful on the spray, you might bend the coils if pressure is too high)

if not, check your wires

Do what I did-

www.residential.carrier.com/res/details/0,,CLI1_DIV109_ETI8445_INT3923_MID3923,00.html

$4662.00 installed. It will save more in $ vs the old system than I was making in interest in the "emergency" fund. When I went home yesterday my wife was "freezing," so I jacked it up to 79 degrees.

Go to the Az hometown forum and ask for carbine10. Keep it local amigo. You'll be glad you did.

The problem with that "save money" logic is that it takes so long to recover the upfront costs.   Even if you saved $50/month on your power bill, it will take you 93 months to recover that cost.  Except in some specific cases, spending a large upfront cost to replace a working system doesn't save money.z

... before calling anyone, go into your attic and look at your return air ducting. In AZ they sometimes blow a zip-tie or duct tape seal.

... Inexpensive repair - ask me how I know

I had this problem last month.  Look at your coils, are they frozen?  Mine was a solid block of ice.  If you stop running the system for eight hours and than turn it on, if it starts to work again the coils froze up.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.   I had to work late and haven't had a chance to take a look at things.   I'll bear in mind all these ideas when I take a look tomorrow am.

Thanks again.

It sounds like a Geco found his way into your airhandler. He then started humping your blower. This made the blower excited. Now it won't ever shut off.

LOSS OF REFRIGERANT. Or I could make a house call and fix it for you. I got finished working today at 9:00PM. What a fun week it's been.

First check your filter(not enough air flow across your evap)then if the filterand your inside unit blower fan is working!

Check your out side condenser fan,and check to see if grass or dirt or leaves are stuck in your condenser coils!

If these things are working then feel the large copper line(usually wraped with donkydick) does it feel cold(like a cool brwesky right out of the cooler)thats the suction line!

If it is warm or not cold(then you need some freon)!

It's hard to tell from here, but check these things out first!!

Good advice  -- In addition -- if you also see any ice forming at either the inside or outside unit, turn the thermostat to cooling "off" position.  Leave the fan in the "on" position to defrost any ice on the evaporator located at the indoor unit (airhandler).  Wait a couple hours then turn it to cooling again. If the compressor outside starts(you should hear it standing next to it) then let it run.  Check your progress after a while. If you start to see ice forming again and you have good air flow indoors, clean filter, all panels secured on  the unit indoors -- then you do probably have a leak . Low refrigerant charge is NOT normal -- some people get by with adding some as they need it. But if your system goes down within a short time again, you should have a leak search performed.
Insist the professional that does the job use high pressure nitrogen to pressurize the system to 300 to 350 psig.  This will allow for the leak to be located  and will also remove any chances of other leaks from not being found if done correctly.  A big scam is when these so called  experts show up and say they'll fix all leaks -- in reality they only just added some freon... Good luck.

  Boog,

I know what you can do. Give this 19 year A/C service tech a call tomorrow. Then I can go to your house and fix it. Or you can listen to all these guys. Your choice.

As for finding a leak. I use a electronic leak detector and soap bubbles. If I can't find it with that. Then I do a isolation leak check. But that's a last resort.
