Just came on. They said it was a routine traffic stop. Multiple subjects that ran and barricaded themselves. Multiple people shot, but, only one officer down, at least, but, even one sucks. LEft behind wife and kids. |

LAUREL, Md. -- A Prince George's County police officer has died following a shootout during a traffic stop Tuesday, county leaders announced in the afternoon. Cpl. Steve Gaughan, 41, was involved in a shooting that happened at about 11 a.m. Tuesday in the area of Route 197 and South Laurel Drive. Investigators said that when units arrived, they found two people shot: Gaughan had a wound to the abdomen and another victim was also shot in the abdomen. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chopper4 Images Prince George's County Police Officer Shot -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gaughan was hospitalized, but died around 5 p.m. He was an 18-year veteran of the Prince George's County police force. County Executive Jack Johnson said Gaughan had two young adopted children. FeedRoom Officer Shot During Stop 'A Very Sad Day' Investigators said he was part of the Special Assignment Team, which was looking for people engaged in crime. The team came upon a suspicious car that they stopped. One person got out of the car and started shooting, Police Chief Melvin High explained. One of the suspects was injured in the shooting and was airlifted to a hospital. Two other suspects were found hiding in a nearby apartment. They were arrested without incident. Route 197 was blocked off in both directions and News4 reporter Pat Collins said there are scores of investigators at the scene in the hours after the shooting. |
Because cops aren't supposed to be judge jury and executioner. As much as some cops would like that, I think most know its better for the system to work the way its supposed to. Which requires live suspects. |
You're right...it IS shitty, and I think the fact that taking a bullet being a known risk of the job is pretty much common knowledge. To insert such a statement here, in this thread, shows an utter lack of tact, IMHO. ETA: prayers out to the fallen officer's family, RIP brother. |
