Well, I broke my cherry today!

My VFW is infested () with a lot of Airborne/SF-types and they got tired of hanging around so many legs, so they made us go jump. The organizer of this little event was MSG Charles Barksdale (RET), who served with the 5th & 7th Groups and MACV-SOG in Vietnam. He's also a Jumpmaster and HALO/HAHO-qualified. (He's even admitted to airborne-qualifying a monkey when he was stationed in Bad Toelz.)

Well, he's punched his ticket to heaven for making the world a better place by getting 15 "Dirty, Rotten, Sticking Legs" airborne qualified.

Here's our wings...

Here's our shirts...
The acronym...
No
Longer
A
Dirty,
Rotten,
Stinking
Leg

Here's a group picture...

Here's my wife getting pinned by MSG Barksdale...

And finally here's me getting my wings...

...ALL THE WAY!

P.S. As soon as I can get the DVD's ripped I'll post them in the Team Forum. (Any suggestions for ripping software?)

God bless you. You ain't a stinking leg no more.

Is that the VFW named after Casey Joyce, so it looks like? That is way cool and I bet an honor to belong to.

What was the aircraft you used?

"admitted to airborne-qualifying a monkey when he was stationed in Bad Toelz." That's some funny shit there. We qualified an Iguana on a weekend while dressed in trendy surf clothing.... Jumped out of a Blackhawk. The weekend Guard guys needed the stick time. Yes, we were a little drunk. SHHHH....

Best wishes to you. AIRBORNE, ALL THE WAY!!!!

How did you do the first jump, static line?  I'm thinking of doing it this summer sometime.

Heh. I'm a five-jump-chump. Scares the living bejesus out of me, and I'm never doing it again. Besides, I don't like walking at the bottom, I'll stick with my armoured vehicles...

Congrats though.

static line airborne ops and skydiving ARE NOT THE SAME THING!

so, why not give skydiving a go?  bone jaring landings are not by design, but an indicator that ya fucked something up! (a hard thing to do)

BTW, I am a D licensed USPA skydiver.

It was a skydive.  (albeit a tandem)

I guess my tongue-in-cheek comments weren't so obviously tongue-in-cheek.

You don't get 'em pinned unless they are blood wings. My uncle that served in the 101st when it was Airborne blood winged me when I graduated Airborne School in '81. Holy Crap it's been a long time!!

my comments are more directed to Manic_Moran.

I didn't mean to take anything away from your experince.

good on ya for doing it!   Tandem is what I recommend to anyone thinking about skydiving.

tandems = minimal training/time & money invested for the experince.

Give the guy a break. He's short less landings than he's got take offs.

If you're a pilot, that's a bad thing. If you jump willingly from the aircraft (sometimes you want to!) and you're not a pilot, it's usually a good thing.

I wished I'd had a chute rig with me on many commercial flights. I'd rather have jumped than land with the idiot, air-going bus driver who was at the controls more than a few times.

I've done both military static line and sport jumping. I liked sport jumping better.

Ah, he's just jerking my chain because I said "Airborne Puke".

My goal is to have 50 jumps before the end of the year.

Good work!

-markl32, 5 jump chump, but not a leg.

BTW, not even sure if this is allowed in the civilian sector, but try a jump at night.  A whole new world of terror not knowing exactly when you're going to hit the ground.

One of the few instances I looked right on that dive.
