I bought two sticks of 512mb of PC3200 DDR DIMM for my new computer I built.

My Mobo is a socket 754 (Athlon 64). I have the correct type of RAM.

But with both sticks installed, the computer just beeps once every three seconds or so with nothing on the screen once I push the power button.

But if I use one stick, it works fine. It's not that one stick is bad, because they both work, just not together.

Anyone know WTF I can do?

You need to isolate the problem using the "process of elimination" or give us more info on what does and doesn't work.

Do you have 4 slots for the ram?

If so then install it in slots 1 and 3 and it should work.

Hmm try playing around with the slots its plugged into.

Some Motherboards have a dislike for using ram in say slots 1 and 3...  instead of 1 nad 2... and some of these same Motherboards number there slots 1,3,2,4 becuase they hate you.

hrmm

what mobo model?

is it too much ram for your motherboard? is the ram seated properly?

if it is award bios.. that beep is unknown code.

this is funny.. just 20 min ago i put in a second stick of 512mb pc3200 ram... but i only have 2 slots.

The KV-80 provides 2 DIMM sockets using 184-pin DDR with a total capacity of up to 2GB using DDR400.

Do you have DDR400?

ETA: Are you sure that they are in all of the way and did you have old memory in there?

Hmm, I was going to suggest checking beep codes and make sure your RAM is seated.  But that doesn't seem like the problem.  I have been through similar experiences and you just kind have to use the process of elimination.

Consult your manual for optimum placement of ram in the slots. Check the dual channel setting in the BIOS the memory may not be able to handle dual channel. Check the memory timing settings to make sure they match up with the memory.

Try each stick separately... you done that.

The memory controller for the Athlon 64 is on the chip and not on the motherboard...

It'a a Gigabyte Technologies K8 Triton. It has 3 slots.

It doesn't matter where I seat them, they don't work, 1 and 2, 1 and 3, 2 and 3, nothing works. It only works with one stick.

Lay them on a table then proceed with this. Turn the heat up in your house. Put on some wool socks and shuffle around the house for about 5 minutes. Walk to the chips and gently touch on, then repat for the other.

The little zap will supercharge the Ram and make it work better.

go into the BIOS and make sure dual channel is OFF.  Then see if both sticks will work together.

That motherboard does not support dual channel... so never mind.

I would take out the memory modules and clear the CMOS and then reinstall the modules and see if that works.

I agree with the above statement.. it seems to be the last logical step before declaring a bad piece of equipment.. most likely the motherboard.

Make sure you try different memory slot combinations.  Especially with an athlon 64 it is probably trying to "pair" them, they may need to be in specific slots for that to work.

Also they should be the same type/speed.  Might check the part numbers to be certain.

You've got the right memory.  A brand would be helpful though.

Try troubleshooting for a faulty RAM slot.  Try a single stick in banks 1, 2 and 3.  Make sure they all work.

Also try resetting the BIOS as stated above and make sure your RAM timings and FSB are not too aggressive.

I redid that, but yes if it was the wrong kind it might do exactly what its doing, as I have seen it. But reread again though.....I changed (I had to re-read to much tonight)

You want BIOS F12, nothing 'later'.  F12 is the latest alpha release from gigabyte, no point in installing a beta BIOS for troubleshooting.

Downloaded the update here

www.giga-byte.com/Download/Download.asp?FileExtName=exe&DownloadPath=/MotherBoard/FileList/BIOS/bios_k8nsnxp_f12

i go to install, get message saying "File size error, please download the 2MB version".

I emailed Gigabyte about all this. Should get a reply in a week or so if last time is an hint to how things will go this time.

I recieved all the parts for this computer months ago. ~$1800 total.

Because of a bad stick of RAM before, it would restart itself suddenly and without warning when I'd do something like click a link, click the back button, open a program, etc.

This is frustrating the hell out of me.
