I'm in the markert for a personal cell phone after years of carrying company provided phones.

Who's the best provider judged by call clarity, connection reliability, etc?

Thanks in advance.

Not Cingular.   Those SOBs told me they'd waive my early termination fee, then wrote the exact opposite in my file.  That's $300 I get to pay now.

I work for the worlds largest supplier of equipment shelters for cellular communications. If you can tell me what region you are in,travel radius, service desires(things like two way capability) I may be able to help you out a little more. But mainly it depends on the region you live in.

Don't know if you have them there,

but I recently got sold to ALLTELL

due to the Cingular/AT&T merger

(something about monopoly laws etc..)

But I have been very impressed, the calls sound good, haven't dropped but one or two, and the customer service is good (crossing fingers)

anyways my two cents.

Verizon most places

I've had Nextel, T-Mobile, and Verizon.  In my area at least, Verizon had the best coverage of the three.  It's been pretty rare that I didn't have signal.  T-Mobile was the worst.  It usually worked, but it had the most dead zones.  And I never got more than two bars inside a building.  Usually no signal.

As much as I hate them I think Verizon is the best.

Verizon-very good.
T-Mobile-crappy coverage if you live outside of a metro area
Cingular-crap
AT&T-expensive crap
Sprint-crap
What is Alltel?

Nextel

Seriously, I had Verizon before Nextel, and though the service was pretty good, the price was too much ($400 bill one month). Nextel does suck, but their "free incoming" plans are definitely worth it.

For this area, the only provider is Alltel.

I've been more than happy with Verizon for going on four years.  I travel a good bit for work and its worked everywhere from Hawaii to middle of nowhere Texas to Virginia and all parts in between.

Verizon

I've used AT&T, Alltel and Verizon. I'm a fairly heavy user (~2000 billed minutes/month) and need nationwide coverage. I have a national plan with no roaming or long-distance anywhere. No one else does that as well as Verizon. They've been there for me in Montana and Recluse, Wyoming too. I also have my family and friends using them, so all those calls and messages are free (not even included in the 2000/mo.).

But if they suck in your region, my experience means nothing.

Check out these responses Jack19 if any of these people are near you this is good gouge. In my area Cingular has the best coverage. When you talk to the shithead at whatever office you decide to get service from take that coverage map they have on the wall with a grain of salt.At best those maps are very optimistic. The best thing to do is ask friends about there service. Why don't you go with whoever provided it on your company phone, was the service bad?

You'll be sorry.  I'm an Alltel customer and have been for years, but they aren't that hot.
Customer service here blows, if it wasn't for the fact a good friend works for 'em I'd have already moved my shit, but she can at least hook me up from time to time.

I used to have AT&T but now I got pushed over to Cingular because of the merger thing.

I just went on a trip to MT and here is what we had:

Cingular: Worked pretty good most of the time
"old" AT&T: Worked pretty good most of the time but was on "roaming" .  Half the time my phone wouldn't ring, but then it would alert me that I had voicemail
Nextel: Didn't work for shit once we left Seattle
T-Mobile: You could actually receive calls, but never once would be able to talk
Verizon: Worked almost the entire time, even going through the passes when my Cingular phone lost signal.

For less than $30 a month, I have no reason to switch from alltel.
My contract expired years ago, I keep using it and keep getting bills, no problem.
When I started using their cell phone service years ago, I did drop calls and even roamed into Canada a few times because I lived in a cell phone dead zone.
It's been fine the last several years, they did put up a tower a mile or so away.
When my car charger went bad, they tossed me a new one, on the house.
There seems to be real Alltel stores and some that look like Alltel stores, maybe that's where some service problems originate?

Very true...  Same company can have outstanding coverage/quality in one area, and totally suck an hour away.  It's really a giant crapshoot.

I'd ask around and see what local folks have to say, before making a decision.

+1

I've used almost all of them except Verizon, and T-Mobile has been my favorite.  YMMV
