| Will shooting firearms with proper hearing protection still lead to hearing problems/hearing loss? Even if I wear plugs and muffs? I love this hobby and all but I'd hate to think down the line it's going to cause serious hearing problems no matter what I do to try to prevent it. |

Sometimes, YES. My father is a victim of that. We went to a covered range a few years ago and he wore both plugs and muffs all day and that day, he received considerable irreversible hearing damage that directly led to his being fitted for two hearing aids. Granted, his hearing was already starting to go a bit, but I must partly blame the covered range's design. The roof reflects the blast right back at you, and it HAMMERS at you. Their roof design simply SUCKS. CJ |

good evening. i am deaf. i was too close to an 8" howitzer when it was fired about 35 years ago or a little more. i wear 2 hearing aids and still don't hear worth a damn. can't talk on phone [even though mine turns up. still get distortion] can't watch tv [don't care anyway], don't go to movies, etc. my ears ring [loud] all the time. it makes me crazy. it is a bitch. i really hate to keep asking people to repeat themselves. you go to a bar and meet a chick and feel like a real asshole because you can't hear what she says. i pretty much stick with shooting now. i wear muffs and sometimes plugs too depending on what i am shooting. my kids learned that one early on too. they don't shoot anything without protection. i wear them to vacuum and mow and cut wood too. it don't take but one time. mr. Johnson; what would the chance of getting a picture of that roof be? i am planning to build a shooting house and i would like ot avoid what you describe. thanks in advance. peace. billr |
