2001 Monte Carlo LS. When you take off sometimes its like it takes a second or two (for the pressure in the tranny to build up ,maybe?) then it takes off kind of in a jerk. When you take off from a stop sometimes it will go then you get that jerk ( not severe but you can feel it )You don't hear any clunking noise. Yesterday after filling it up with gas I put it in drive and it took about 10 or longer seconds to engage drive. I drove it this morning to see if it only does it when it is hot and it did it again. Not all the time but pretty frequently. Just started this yesterday. It had the filter and fluid changed in it not even 2 years ago and it has had maybe 16000 mile put on it since then. Any ideas? Thanks. |

I assume you already checked the fluid levels? Torque converter or trans failure. It's gonna be a bunch of $$$. Once upon a time I had a trans that was shifting constantly in the 40mph range. I took it to AAMCO and they said they needed to pull it to see what was wrong and they'd give me a free estimate on the repair. They pulled it and said I needed new seals and they already had it apart and could fix it right up. I choked at the $800 price tag so they buttoned it back up for me and I never had another problem with it. ( I think they had to replace the seals to put it back together) Anyhow I got a free fix. Might be worth a shot to have a dedicated trans shop take a peek at it. Just make sure they will not charge you for the looksee and will return it to driving condition regardless. |
At operating tempeature, in park, with the engine running, check the fluid. It sounds like it may be low, as the symptom you describe is what happens when it is low on fluid.

Change the fluid and filter again. Be sure to drain the torque converter if you can. Clean the magnet. When refilling the tranny, be sure to add Slick 50 transmission treatment to it. It will get you some more miles out of it. You may need to check and see if it has a minor problem like a weak pressure spring or something. I have a Bronco II that was slipping and heating the fluid up and boiling out the tube. I did just as I posted here and now have over 50k more miles on it. It shifts smooth and precise. Add a cooler. |

Just a guess, but it sounds like the seals may be worn. I'd try adding a pint of Trans-X transmission seal conditioner (available at Auto Zone). Any improvement should become apparent within a few hundred miles. If it works, you'll probably need to keep adding it every few months. |

2nd on the Trans-X. I usually shy away from 'snake oil' treatments, but my brother had a 1 ton 90 Chevy diesel pickup that was slipping and hesitant to shift. He did the fluid/filter change with no improvement. Added Trans-X and it now drives fine. Your mileage may vary. |
| the trans x stuff may work for a limited time, as a patch before an overhaul, do not expect it to fix the problem permanently, it works by swelling up the rubber/viton seals in the trans, this can appear to fix the trans, but those soft seals do not last long at all |
Guess that depends on your definition of "not long at all"... ![]() In my experience, getting an extra 5 years out of the transmission isn't unusual. Trans-X doesn't make the seals excessively soft, but rather restores them to their original softness (which is why it is also recommended for transmissions in good condition, BTW). |
