Any vet techs?  Do you like your job?  Pay?  Working conditions?  Suggestions?  Education?

I dated a girl for over a year that was a vet tech.  She loved/hated it.  She loved it when she as able to help mend an animal, but she hated it when the vet would come in and tell her she had several animals that had to be put down - every day.

The pay was not enough - but it never is, is it...  For a suggestion - ask at a clinic if you can come in and shadow a tech for a few hours to get a taste.

All I can say about the vet techs at my vets is that they're the most dedicated people I have ever met.

They really busted their asses to keep the little guy going over a year ago when all of his systems shut down. They worked late and nursed him constantly. The SEC is one of their prize patients, and most people would have written him off. Not them.

The pay sucks.

The most common comment heard from Vet Techs is this: Too bad such wonderful animals have owners. (Made in reference to impatient pet owners that expect too much out of them, or are otherwise idiots.)

I'm looking to hire a vet tech in AL. If you or someone you know are interested, please IM or E-mail me.

The only portion of this that I can attest to is the working conditions part- they vary WILDLY from practice to practice. I have seen them treated very badly and treated better than they deserve to be treated- it's heavily dependent on the character of the vet that owns the practice.

I work as a vet tech in 2 different practices. One is a hospital at the county animal shelter, the other is at a private practice.

I love my job. First job I have ever had where I looked forward to coming to work. While I was in the military, I had alot of time to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, and it boiled down to law enforecement or veterinary medicine. So, when I got out, I started college to start working my way toward vet-med school. Part of the application process for vet-med school is experience, so after I started school, I begin looking around for a job for experience. I picked up a volunteer position at the animal shelter, which eventually turned into a paid position. I learned everything as I went, and never went to formal vet tech school (which is about 6mos in length). I apply to vet med school in a year and a half, and I can't wait.

The pay isnt great, so you arent going to get rich if vet tech is your career aspiration. The working conditions are great at both places I work.....LOTS OF HOT GIRLS. To the point that its distracting. At the private practice, I am the only guy that works there other than the Dr's.

The shelter situation can be emotionally draining. We see the worst of the worst there. Almost everyday you are reminded that there really are fates worse than death.

Anything else you would like to know?

My coworkers wife is a vet tech and she loves her job. She is also going to school to become a vet because she wants to stay in the vetinary field while earning a better living.

FWIW, I asked a vet tech why she hadn't done something else like become an RN.

She told me that animals are grateful, unlike people that will sue the person that saves their life.

I understood that one instantly.
