So I come up to South Dakota for my friends wedding.  My CHL is good here, but SD also allows open carry without a permit.

So... what the hell.  I simply cannot think of one single reason against open carry of a side arm.

You should see some of the faces I get.

One old guy gave me a very dirty look, while his wife looked at my Sig, made eye contact with me, and smiled!!!

Went and bought beer last night at a gas station, one that gets 51% or more of their revenue from other than alcohol / malt beverages

I even carried in my buddies CHURCH!  A cop showed up, and I figured someone got a case of sandy mangitis and dropped a dime.  Turned out, it was the Preachers son!  He had to drop something of for his dad!

To all you nancy whiner boys who say open carry is bad...

BAH!!!

How I wish Oklahoma had Open carry.

I like that we have a CWL, but I would really like for open carry as well.  Conceled carry can be a pain at times, open carry would be so much more comfertable.

Glad you enjoyed yourself.

I would LOVE to be able to open carry!

I would probably carry concealed most of the time, but I would never have to worry about "printing" or "bradishing".

That would take the bricks out of the briefcase!

Nationwide, what part of SD where you at? I'm in the Yankton area, have open carried a couple times (though I really dont like to) and no one has blinked an eye.

Feels good, doesn't it?

No, but the officer that came to the church had a Glock.

Maybe THAT is why he didn't say anything to me.

I don't have an issue with open carry. But I prefer for other not to know I'm carrying.

To me open carry means if the defecation hits the oscillation you will be the first target.

I like a good pancake holster that puts the butt of the gun just underneath your rib cage. Easier to draw from in most positions.

Try drawing from a thigh holster in the seat of a car.

Only good things about Florida after a hurricane is the few days of "unofficial" open carry that follow.

At night this includes slung rifles and shotguns. During the day we are in McDonalds with HKs and Sigs on the belt.

Yeah, it's fun, but it makes me feel like I have to be on my best behavior all the time, and my level of awareness has to be higher. It's like being at a job interview for me. Around here no one bats an eye at me open carrying. It's just not an issue. It came in handy on a bike ride for my wife, and daughter and I once too.  Had to fend off some mean Great Danes(they had bitten before).

I feel the same way, we can open carry in AZ but I don't usually unless I'm off to the range.

Well, I agree on the best beahviour part.  I certainly need to pay attention to that when I'm carrying, concealed or open.

I think because of my life experiences, like most folks on the board here, my awareness is never below condition yellow.

Yeah, Iowa is supposed to be a legal open carry state, but they put so many restrictions on it that it's useless...

In my CCW class they told us we could legally open carry but that the cops would swarm all over us if we did... WTF?

Then I found out later that it was BS anyway.  Carrying in city limits or just about any other public place is illegal.

dumbasses...

I checked the SD reg's before I came up.  There is pre-emption of firearm ordinances at the County, Township, and Municipality level.  And the law specifically states open carry is allowed without a permit.

The law reads the only places off limits are 51% estabolishments, Schools, and Federal Buildings.

There is no provision for signs banning carry, although I'm certain a property owner or representative could verbally exclude the open carry of a sidearm.

No problems though.

I agree - open carry leads to a faster draw.........but keep up on your weapons retention skillz and situational awareness is KEY.........its a matter of preference - just keep in mind that are respective responsibilities entailed with carrying - be it concealed or open carry - each presents itself with different obstacles.

It's odd that you need a license to carry concealed in NH but open-carry doesn't require one.  They've been pushing for no license necessary for CC if you're over 21/no record.  Now if we could only have loaded rifles in our cars . . .

We can open carry here in AZ and I've done it, but I prefer concealed-for the same reasons as BamaShooter. I don't want anyone knowing I'm carrying a gun.

I've also had my share of open carry and standing in line at Blockbuster or the grocery store and hear a child's voice saying, "MOMMY! That man is carrying a GUN!"

It's no big deal, and I'm always prepared for a witty answer to a snide comment, but it hasn't happened. I just eliminate the whole scenario by carrying concealed.

THEN AGAIN..........every now and then I decide to rile the sheeple a bit and strap my S&W 686 on my hip and open carry THAT intimidating-looking fucker. People sometimes just can't take their eyes off it.

There are times for concealed carry and times for open carry.  IMHO concealed carry is best for most situations, but there are a few occassions where open carry would be preferable or practical.  IMO CCW/CHL holders should always have the option of open carry.
