He is not in the same low class as a normal draft dodger.

While I don’t like what he did at least he had the conviction no matter how misplaced to stay and face the music and not run when he had the money to do so.

He did time in jail when he did not have to... where as other draft dodgers got a free pass from Jimmy.

I got far more problems with the sh*t he said about Joe Louis who was a real American hero.

how many draft dodgers did time?

The ones that ran to Canada did not one day... but got a pardon from Jimmy.

Yeah but none I bet were buddies with a violent kill the white Devil Malcom X and changed their name to Cassius X (since Clay was his slave name as he proclaimed) prior to Muhammed Ali.  Elijah Muhammed anyone?  Sorry once a draft dodger always a draft dodger and muslim sympathizer......

I don't know whether he's stil NOI or has become an authentic RoP'er. Either way it suggests piss-poor judgment. The name change business has always struck me as juvenile, whether it's Frizzell Gray becoming Kweisi Mfume or Cassius Clay becoming Mohammed Ali. It's also futile: the act of changing one's name to eradicate the hold "society" or "the white man" has over you is itself a perpetual acknowledgement not only of your subject status but of the effect it has on you.

OTOH, he was a successful boxer, and more importantly, when he burned his draft card, he took his punishment like a man. That goes a long way toward redeeming him in my book.

In any event, I am mystified by the awe and respect with which he is viewed by many. The greatest boxer who ever lived is entitled to no more respect that the greatest yard man who ever lived.

Someone posted the same thing about John Wayne......

I am just wondering if the US would have been better off if they had served and maybe been killed
OR, if they made a big enough contribution to our history\culture they made the better choice
(This exact dilemma is addressed briefly in one of my favorite books ARMOR, by John Steakley)

I would just like to see the discussion at least MENTION that aspect of the situation

John Wayne was not 4F'd he was 34 years old with kids which made him low in the draft order.... and the military actually prefered he made movies, they though this was of more value.

Ronald Reagan was 4F… he was almost deaf. He tried to enter all three services twice and was turned down he then pestered the Army into letting him make training films.

I don't think I'm going to generate any stomach acid over it.  There's enough important things to cry about that I'm not going to worry about him.

Poor Badseed, picking on a helpless old man!...j/k...lol

You'll be surprised how vulnerable they are, being a champ and In the ring is one thing, being a champ and IN the street is another...

Even in their prime, a champ boxer does NOT imply he could fight well, out in the street, in the real world.

Which is funny because Jesus wasn't "white" and Mohammed was...  Even the NOI has that in their teaching.

I have no problem with Ali.  He was a great fighter and a great man.

I will never forget watching some of his last fights as a child (and the horrendous comeback where Holmes schooled him)

Interesting thread... I think most would agree that his draft stand was not popular.  His religious conversion & name change also were unusual in that at the time, especially for such a visible public figure.  Regardless, he is certainly one of the best boxers ever, he accepted the consequences of his behavior like a man and if you judge him by his accomplishments he may really be "the greatest".

5/6/2005 5:35:35 AM EDT
[#32]
I really never figured why people respect and lionize this guy. I did not grow up in his era so maybe that is it. But to me he was nothing more than a coward draft dodger who made millions off of a country he was not willing to serve.

Ali was one of the greatest athletes of the 20th Century...and by far the most well-known around the world...his religion had nothing to do with his talent and ability.

Yeah, Too bad he didnt come from a wealthy family,he could have just been placed in a cushy reserve job instead of having to convert to islam.

Never seen the love affair with Ali.
Arrogant and ignorant.  Makes millions off a country that he can't stop bad mouthing.
Maybe he should have boxed in Saudi Arabia if we were so bad.
He didn't want to get shot, he didn't give a rats ass about Islam or anything else but himself.

If you saw him on Black and white TV and relize a lot of stuff was happening then , AND look at him compared to boxers of THAT time , well I was young but couldnt stand him . But in retrospect I dont see how anyone couldnt help but admier him . As far as "his mouth" well , whats Howard with out a Cosell ? As with that so much of the 60's You just had to be there . Who was Sonny Liston anyway?

He was, and is, a sorry sack of manure.
5/6/2005 5:02:45 PM EDT

I also think he was the greatest boxer of all time. He was also a consumate salesman, or is that, pitchman?

I certainly don't condone dodging the draft, but like it's been said, he made his stand and willingly payed the price. I'll respect him for that.
5/6/2005 5:04:11 PM EDT

Awww..........Rocky Marciano would kick his draft dodging butt, as would Joe Louis in his prime

He was because he pestered the Army until they gave him a comission and let him make training films before that he was 4F.
