Well, I attend Villanova University, which is a Catholic college.
I am NOT Catholic, I am conservative Episcopalian aka not one of the Episcopalians who likes the fact that we have an openly gay bishop.
Tonight, I am going to the Catholic church services we have on campus with my girlfriend, who is a Catholic.

Point is, I am quite disgusted with the Episcopal church's behavior as an institution, and I am searching for other denominations that might mesh better with what I believe. Since Pope John Paul II was always a man I looked up to and admired, I figure I'll check out his former place of employment.

So, I'm going to the Catholic church to see what I can see.
I do realize that the Catholic church in America is not exactly the beacon of values it is over sea, but still, I'll check her out.

I will update when I return.

In my past experiences Episcopalian is pretty darned close to Catholic. I mean the Holy Roman Church is prevalent in their writings and all. Okay, more liberal but...

I'll trade ya' the openly gay bishop for the closet sexual predators anyday.

ETA from a disgrunteled and disgusted Catholic.

2x in an entire mass is a lot?

WRT to the original post: I think that the Catholic Church is going to see a resurgence in this country. Many members of protestant denominations are becoming fed up with the liberalization of their denominations, but at the same time they're not attracted to the fundamentalist/charismatic form of worship. There's an undeniable attractiveness to the ritual and pagentry of the Catholic Church (and many of the protestant varieties) that Fundamentalists don't offer. (and openly ridicule)

FWIW, I was raised Catholic but I'm presently agnostic (as most of you know )

In the event that I'm "saved" I'm going back to the Catholic Church to worship.

That seems to be the case. Not too long ago Time ran an article on the growth of the Catholic Church in the south.

Doh! I forgot the smiley face.

Lighten up, Francis. It's never even crossed my mind that a man of the cloth might buggar anyone. Really. What kind of sick mind could even imagine that a priest would do such a thing. Let alone make a joke about it. Perish the thought.

Pope Benedict has decreed that you say 10(zig) Hiel Mary's and preform and act of contrition.

Been Catholic all my life and have never met any priest I've ever suspected of being a pedophile.
That said, they should never have let the pedophiles in the priesthood in the first place and they should have defrocked them the instant a reasonable charge came up.

Anyway, thedoctors308, I hope your visit went well.  If you want more info, this site may be useful for you.    They're very good Catholic apologists and the info is always accurate; however realize that they are apologists and that as such they're a little bit more rigid, out-to-prove, and sometimes a bit more simplistic about things than Rome actually is.

You also may be interested to know that there is indeed an Anglican usage in the Catholic Church.  It's small in America, but you can find more info here and I do believe there is such a parish in NJ.  You may want to search the site, or even better email them for more info.

I always hated kneeling until Father Macoron told me to look above altar and asked me how do you think Jesus felt hanging on the cross. He then asked me if kneeling for 5 minutes is really asking a lot of me........ I have never complained about kneeling again

thanks,
Ron

What's going to happen with the RCC in the US is the same thing that has happened with harsher penalties for crime.

All over America, governments got serious about locking up criminals (including chickenshit criminals, but that's another matter), and crime went down. Liberals began writing articles and editorials expressing deep befuddlement at the fact that even though crime is going down, we are incarcerating more people!?!?!?

The new Pope is the Tom DeLay of the Vatican (minus the fondness for comped golf junkets): Delay is "the Hammer;" Benedict XVI was formerly "the Enforcer." A loving yet hardass Pope who has read the Bible and is a doctrinal poindexter and all-around no-nonsense guy has been elevated: people will flock to the RCC. The liberal press will write articles and editorials expressing deep befuddlement at the fact that even though the Pope tells people they have to behave themselves, the Church is growing!?!?!?

I have plenty of issues with Rome. If I didn't, I'd be RCC. But that's my $.02.

I was born Catholic, more or less stopped going except at Christmas and Easter for about 20 years.  I married an Episcopalian about 12 years ago.  We started going to a Catholic church last year at Easter - she loved it and converted this year at Easter.   There were 2 other Episcopalians in her RCIA classes.  They all agreed the Episcopal church had drifted too far.

As to growth in the South, our Parish has grown by 15% over the last year.  I understand most of the other parishes in the diocese are growing are fast rate as well.

I'm a Recovering Catholic...oh the guilt!

Recently I heard a new term.."Cafeteria Catholics" which basically means Catholics who pick and choose what they want out of the Catholic faith (birth control, confession, etc).  That might be a new term, but almost every Catholic I know is that way.

My mother is almost certain that I'm going to hell and wonders where she went wrong with me!  The way I see it I have a sister that is a NUN.  That could  just be my ticket to heaven!!!

I wandered from the faith years ago.  I gravitated back as I had a child and got married.  I am involved in my church and am a Brother Knight in the Knights of Columbus.
