Just had a hard drive crash in my laptop.  It made some funny noises, then everything locked up.  Wouldn't boot after that.  have
Any recommendations?  How much does it cost?

I dont have any experience with data recovery companies, but I may have another solution, that we use at work all the time.

I dont know how easy the hard drive is to take out and put back in, but this may do the trick.  You will need an adapter to convert the the 2.5" hard drive to IDE.  Like this one - www.casecooler.com/3drto2dr.html

Next -
Freeze the drive.  In a plastic bag, put it in your freezer for a few hours.  Then take the drive out, hook it to the adapter, and see if you can recover any data.

Trust me, this works.  We do this all the time at work to recover and back up data on customer computers that have had hard drive crashes.  It doesnt work all the time, but sometimes it will work great.  I have done it to a personal drive that crashed also, worked like a charm.

If it doesnt work, THEN send it to the data recovery specialists, if the data on the drive is that important to you that is.....

I'm definitely trying that tomorrow.  I found that adapter at CompUSA.  I'll go by there first thing tomorrow.  Thanks for the suggestion!
