My 444th post. Those of you who flyfish, will get that. I really miss the trout fishing up in Central NY...anyone have stream reports? |
|
A bit. I have an old 7ft fiberglass Eagle Claw rod with a Martin 60 reel and floating line I occasionally take out. IMHO, catching bluegill on a ultralight flyrod is tough to beat for fishing fun, and eating them CANNOT be beat. I use topwater poppers and once in a while I'll hook up with a bass in the 2lb+ range and that's a HOOT. Lots of fun with a 4lb tapered leader. It teaches you to PLAY the fish. I haven't fly fished for trout since 1983, when I fished the Green River in Wyoming and caught WILD TROUT. I used the rig I described above and it worked just fine. The GF's son works at a high profile strip mall (Kierland, for the AZ folks) and I went into the Orvis shop there. Fly rods for $1000+. Reels for $500+.

Colorado is lookin good all over, mountain lakes are thawing, and streams are not up to full flows yet... Wyoming- The N. Platte should be BEAUTIFUL right now, especially around the Grey Reef area. Dats the general fishin report. I aint postin the good stuff on the net.

I won't make you ill by telling you how much I didn't pay for them. I know they're special, I'm not sure what all of the hype is. It's been close to 20 years since I last fly fiished. Almost as long since I fished. Though I took my son fishing once. He caught a Large Mouth Bass and took off running when he saw it. Hasn't wanted to go since. *sigh* |
Before you take those old rods out again be sure to loosen or 'wake' them up. Bamboo is known to shatter if not used regularly. |
I'll be your son if you leave me your rods |

I only keep a few fish-except for bluegill-when I go. I only keep the bare minimum in size-like 10" in bass, because the larger fish just don't have any taste at all. You wouldn't believe the 5 to 7lb bass I've tossed back into the lakes I've fished. (I fish jig & pigs a lot. For some reason you only catch BIG fish with those) Same for trout-except that hatchery raised fish of ANY size don't really have a taste. Now the wild trout.........Different story. I'm sure the Wyoming, Utah, and Montana guys will chime in. When I fished the Green River they had a size "slot" where you could keep small fish or really large fish, but the ones between like 12" and 22" had to be released-in order to keep a good gene pool. That was fine with me. |
Where abouts on the Green do you fish? |
I'd just go out and cast them nice and easy for a while before you hook anything on them. |
I spent two weeks backpacking and flyfishing in the sawtooths in Idaho. Some of those trout reminded me of Salmon. Most of my flyfishing was done in California. |

Took two Fly Fishing classes here at Penn State. I do Spring Creek when I can. I've also fished Wayne Harpster's place once, with Joe Humphreys. Part of a program where us Masters of Fly Fishing (offical course name) guys taught some undergrads from inner cities the basics of fly fishing. Mr. Humphreys is a hell of a fisherman and caster. I've never seen somebody toss out so much line at once and control it. Also, he was showing us on the stream something that you shouldn't do (as an example), and hooked a trout anyway. |
| I'd contest the "hatchery fish don't have a taste" statement, I've eaten some mighty good trout that were hatchey and raceway raised. Better fresh of course, once frozen they are still good, though not quite as. And spending that much on Orvis stuff is silly. G-Loomis for rods and Ross for reels. Can't beat that combo. I've got a 9ft 5wt and an 8 1/2 ft 4 wt pack rod that are both trout slayers. Catching a 3 1/2 lb trout on that 4wt with a 6x or 8x tippet is a thrill. |
To be honest I don't know. Two are custom handmade jobs my Father and Grandfather had made, another one is a combo rod that can be switched to a spinning rig. This was my favorite backpacking rig. The others IIRC are South Bend. |

Flyfishing whats that?????? I go out and put on my gear and stuff and then proceed to "whip" the fish onto the banks by repeatedly smacking the water with my rod tip. I also sit in my gun-room and tie up these cute little critters for my wife that she can fasten onto her jackets with a crafty little hook on the back. Please provide me more detail about this "Flyfishing" it sounds pretty neat. ![]() Sites Fished: Florida Keys - Flamingo/Everglades to Marquesas --- Gulf Coast to Cedar key Honduras Caracos- Venezuela Jamaica Bahamas Pennsylvania Delaware Maryland Alaska New York Rhode Island North Carolina Georgia West Virginia Texas Louisiana So many damn good memories...people you meet...things that you see and know you will never see again. Very humbling experiences..... |

Drew: I've caught trout from all the trophy trout areas in Missouri (St. Louis native) and after a while we just threw them ALL back. Unless we dressed them up with lots of onion, garlic and lemon they had no real taste. Maybe things have changed. We fished the trophy trout area on the Meramec River frequently. Take Hwy. 19 to "K" to "E" to "YY" and make a left and go down to Parker's Ford. It's about 4 miles south of Meramec Springs. |
