Anyone use it insted of Photoshop? I tried it tonight so I could find out more about it and help some people that don't want to spend $80 + on Photoshop out. (They aren't computer people, but not as bad as I have seen.) Anyway, it is very well written and has a lot of tools that you find in photoshop. Photoshop in the end is A LOT better, but GIMP is very good for being a OS software and free. The only thing I hate is the three (or 2) windows open. That drove me nuts.

This will pass onto the archive server because I have no clue why I posted this.

i used to use Gimp, now i don't do much with images.

it's incredible for being free.

needs better documentation though.

$80 for photoshop??  where?

the gimp is pretty decent, esp. for free.  i've used a little bit.  but in a professional environment, photoshop is king.

that being said, it should do most anything someone is wanting to play around with and not spending the cash on photoshop.  excellent choice for a "hobbyist".

That's a little low for legit Academic pricing so I'd assume with it's bad licenses or Photoshop Elements it runs about 80 bucks retail

And while it might be the home "dumbed down" version of the real Photoshop it's still 5-10 times the software the GIMP is

I really think that the GIMP is a good example of why Open Source software is good in the server room but sucks for the desktop

The project leaders actaully think it's something that competes with Photoshop

Edit : Penguin - the Elements package is about 35-50% of the real Photoshop (it's a "dumbed down" home version of the software)
