I need to upgrade my work notebook to a larger hard drive and don't know how to clone the original drive. I've read about software that you can load into your original hard drive to assist but therein lies the problem. My employer has locked the computer so that no software can be loaded without a password. The IT guys won't help me so I'm buying my own drive and have to do this on my own. Can this be done without the use of third party software? |
I know what you are saying but I'm not worried about being fired. Our IT guy is a meglomaniac who acts like the computer guy on SNL. An external drive is impractical for my installation as it's mounted in a car. |

Ok, to image or ghost a drive in a laptop you need a place to store the image. Does your laptop have a cd/rw on it? Also can you boot from a CD? There are password reset cd's that will allow you to reset any LOCAL(ie. Administrator) account password. If so you can then install the program. You still have an issue of only one drive in the laptop. You could burn the image/ghost to cd's if you have a burner then the CD's SHOULD allow you to boot to them with the new blank hard drive in the laptop and then dump the iname on the blank drive. Pesonally I use a networked pc for image storage and then pull it back from there with a network boot disk. Simple. I do this almost every week at work. ByteTheBullet (-: |

Well the higher end versions of ghost can send the image over a network. It can be tricky to get working from a boot disk but can be done. The other easier option is a laptop to desktop hard drive converter. These will let you plug 2 laptop hard drives into a desktop computer that you have control over. The converters can be found at must larger computer stores like fry’s. Hope this helps. NoKarma |
