| If someone showed up in your ER and claimed that they had an erection for more that 4 hours, what would you do? |
|
It's called priapism, and it is a medical emergency. The venous outflow from the penis is restricted, and can result in tissue death. It requires treatment ASAP. It can also be a result of viagra type medications, and also is a result of some spinal injuries. In any event a four hour woody is a problem, and needs to be handled promptly (no pun intended) |

A large needle aimed just in the right spot |
Since you asked: First choice is drugs to decrease smooth muscle tone, allowing blood to flow out. If this is unsuccessful, the medication can be injected directly in the corpus cavernosum. If this still doesn't work, the corpus can be drained using a needle. If the cause is too much blood going in, rather than not enough coming out, you treat the inflow problem. If it is a result of a spinal injury, you have bigger issues to worry about. In any event, much like many medical maladies, you don't want it to happen to you. |
