I have a wireless router ( Linksys ) serving both my desktop and laptop.  The desktop has a wireless card ( PCI?) and the laptop has it built in.  I was implementing the suggested security changes as per Linksys's website, and ran into a problem.  One of them was changing the SSID.  As soon as I changed the SSID, I lost my connection on both computers.  Now I think I have to change the SSID on all wireless products?  Even my card on the desktop, and the internal one in the laptop?  AM I wrong or is ther something else?  Thanks for the help!!!

Yes, match the SSID setting on the computers and they will immediately reconnect.

Do you know how I do that?  I looked under the properties menu of my wireless card and was unable to change it?  Unless I have to gange the card before the router?  Thanx!!

You need to run whatever configuration software that came with your wireless cards.  I have Linksys, so what I do is just click on the little status icon in the tray and it brings up the configuration/status utility.

You must have some software that controls the wireless cards, maybe a little icon on the screen, etc.

Not so fast sparky - he changed the setting on his router via his wireless computer.  Therefore, he can't just change the setting back because he no longer has a connection to the computer.

Comprende?

Actually I was able to regain access by hard wiring to the router.  I'm still working on changing the wireless card's SSID.

Hey, Shoot, you have a utility that runs the wireless cards on each computer.  Or in XP, you can not use those, installing only the drivers, and use XP's built in "Wireless Zero" utility.  In there you should be able set each computer so it is looking for the SSID of the router.

Duh, guys, when you configure a wireless router, you don't do it through your wireless card!

Sheesh!

You do it though your LAN card, hooked directly into the back of the router via ethernet cable.

Sorry, jeeze.  It took me a minute, but I kinda realized that.  Got everything working good now with my new security  Thanks for the help ( and criticism) guys!!!
