| Well, tomorrow is the big day. I'm going this afternoon to pick up my trailer and get it loaded. I have a few loose ends to tie up, and then it's off to Dallas. |
Mock 'em? Flip 'em the BIRD! If they're in Texas, they're used to it by now! BTW, Welcome to Texas, the Lord's Gun Rack! Eric The(DefenderOfAllThatIsRight)Hun

Good luck! A co-worker that moved from Dallas, TX to the SE MI area just moved to NJ. She hated MI and I can tell you that she'll hate NJ in a few years. I moved from NJ to MI. I have a lot of relatives in Houston... I certainly do NOT miss the fire ants, emissions inspection, and the intense dry heat. |
Go ahead and check your Red Wings, Tigers, Lions, and Pistons garb at the Red River. You dont want to get punished now, do you? |
| Dallas is a very nice place. Spend some time at the West End, lots of good eating places there. Personally, I like the Sunny Bryan's BBQ there. The BBQ ribs are real hickory smoked. They have a pile of those logs piled high right outside of the door. Check out the 6th Floor Museum, they have a lot of memorbilla from John Kennedy's asassination. |
Fire ants = Real problem. Step into a mound one time and you'll carry a bag of chemical death with you whenever you see a mound appear. Intense pain from the sting (and they like to wait until they can attack en masse), turns into a red pus-filled blister and starts itching after a day or so. Scorpions = Nuisance. I've seen a couple. My father-in-law was stung a loooong time ago. Probably more of an issue if you live in the "country". The scorpions in question are fairly small, more of a nuisance than a real danger even if you get stung. Snakes? Again - you'll see some, but I've never been close to a poisenous snake. The real issue? Heat. Lots of it. All the time. Mid April through October sometimes. [ETA]What makes it hard to take is that it's even uncomfortable in the morning. There's no "cool-off" period. You're starting to sweat by 9am, and it's over 90 by 10am, and doesn't really cool down into the 80's until after midnight. The morning low is in the lower 80's and the cycle quickly repeats for what seems like an eternity. |
Here there be monsters. No one likes it here. Everyone is skeered to death of all the fire ants, scorpions, snakes, and such. Hell, I hardly leave the house any more, it seems, I am so afraid. Eric The(StayWhereYouAre,I'llSendACheck)Hun

Intense pain compared to what? I always thought of fire ant stings as being a nuisance. A few stings or less, and it just stings for a second and itches. Now, hundreds of stings might be a different story. I always thought the stings from the big red ants (don't know the technical name) hurt a lot worse...only a little less than a bee or hornet sting.
Yeah, but it's a tiny pus-filled blister, at least for me.
Getting stung by a scorpion hurts like you wouldn't believe. Much worse than a "nuisance".
Guess you don't have a garden or live near a creek? |
That right there pretty much exposes that you've never been to Houston. ![]() Ain't no such thing as a "dry heat" in Houston. Remember the Alamo, and God Bless Texas... |
They're not anything like the Piney Woods I called home. Remember the Alamo, and God Bless Texas... |
He simply didn't know how to ask for Texas pie! And he never wanted to go 'pie-hunting' with me! My success rate is....well...legendary around these parts! Eric The(EverSinceMyDivorce)Hun

BTW, welcome to Texas. DFW is an interesting place, even for a Texan who has lived in Houston all his life. Lots of money, lots of beautiful people, and lots of opportunity if you keep your eyes open. Also lots of crime in certain parts of the area. Traffic sucks, but it sucks everywhere. What part of town are you living in? Remember the Alamo, and God Bless Texas... |
| Hey there mowtown steve, from a former michigander, who lives in fort worth, A big howdy and God bless texas. I must say I wasn't to keen on it when I moved, but I was greatly supprised. The texans are really friendly and most have multipule firearmsh.gif. I have been here in fort worth for four years now and am quit happy. Once you get used to the hot summers it is very nice even have had snow on the ground for new years and christmass. |
I hear you. Last time I was in Dallas/FW the ladies were willing but alas I already had a ring in my nose... |
The heat's overrated, IMO. Here in San Antonio, the house air conditioning is usually only needed for 4-6 hours. The outside air cools off after sunset, and stays that way until the middle of the next morning - makes for pleasant evenings and great sleeping, if you've got some way of pulling the air indoors. |
Quoted:
I think the 'heat thing' is way overrated, as well! I grew up in West Texas with nothing more than 'swamp coolers' or 'evaporative units' (as we called them) in the windows. Granted swamp coolers work pretty well considering the low humidity in West Texas, but 115 degrees Fahrenheit is still 115 degrees! We were just used to it back then. But there's no reason why we can't continue to use 'excessive heat, fire ants, scorpions, and snakes' as a ruse to keep the Yankees from swarming all over us, now, is there?
