I am planning my new computer and thinking of using AMD's new 64 bit chip processor and running Windows XP 64 bit software.

Anybody here built a machine with these new 64 bit chips?

How are they working out for you?

Intel is making a 64 bit chip too. its the 600 series.

64bits are all but useless right now because no programs are written to take advantage of the 64 bits...its still all 32 bits.

I have the intel 640 and just run 32 bit windows. Its fast but untill they start making progams for emt64/amd64  is all but useless.

I expect 64 bit proggies to start coming out later next year

AMD's 64 processors are bad ass.  If I was building a new computer that is what I would buy.  Their 32 bit performance rocks.  Not much in the ways of 64 bit software out there.  That will change in a few years.

While you are right, there is no 64 bit programs out there....it's only a matter of time.

Windows 64 will be out soon, and it would be nice if they came out with a 64 bit version of Office within a few years.

And the 32 bit performance of these AMD 64 bit chips are really great compared to INTEL, and a lot cheaper to boot.

Sitting her on my 2800+ 64 bit system and have never had a problem with it.

Linux is available for the 64-bit AMD systems.

I built a AMD 64 bit system for a guy and he couldnt be happier.

Until MS puts out a 64bit OS it's not really worth the money.

Ofcouse if you're in the market for a new PC right now anyway, go ahead and build a 64bit system as a 64bit OS will probably hit the market before 2 years from now.

The 64 bit chips arent too exxpensive right now.

If you get it, you will help ensure you won't have to upgrade cpu's anytime soon.

Get it, you'll be glad you did

64 bit XP is out now, but only in the OEM version.  You have to ask for it.

I have.  They are speedy in 32 bit mode with XP and 2000 and in 64 bit mode (FreeBSD and Linux) the scoot right along.  Run a good deal cooler than the P4s, too, which is nice.

Buy one - you'll be happy (unless your a moron)

I just put together a 2ghz 64 on an Asus SLI board and have to say it's the fastest damn computer I've ever used

XP 64 can be had for a free download from Microsoft (year long demo) - boots in under 4 seconds for me and stuff just happens - that's the only way I can explain it - you don't wait for stuff to happen it just does - sorta like using a high end PowerMac that is fully loaded on RAM - I was really starting to hate computers again but well AMD made me happy again

The Intel 64 bit stuff dissapoints horribly compared with what I've seen from AMD so far (yes I own both even own an Itanium 2 based solution that doesn't get turned on anymore - the 6x line of P4s has a LOT of catching up to do)

Horse manure.

If you consider the most bang for the buck in a chip worthless I guess you could be right.

SIMPLE FACT…

32 bit processors are a dead end.

The AMD 64 gives you the most bang for the buck and will allow you to grow in to a 64 bit OS.

Linux is out in 64 bit NOW and Windows XP 64 bit is due out to OEMs any day and will probably be released to the public in the next 4-6 weeks. AND the word is out Microsoft will be offering a FREE upgrade path from Windows XP Professional to Windows XP 64.

At this point only someone not paying attention would buy a 32 bit CPU.

True but the on die memory controller and large cache is nice.

I'd get the processor but hold of on Windows XP 64. I'd give it a little more time to mature and get full support before making the big move.
