I am interested in a virtually new Ruger GP100 4" stainless. NOT buying from Ruger, so politics aside, what are possible problems you have had with this revolver? I have heard that, as good as they have been in the past, Ruger is shipping product that wouldn't have made it out the door in the past. Haven't seen it yet. Trying to this weekend. Thanks for your input.

I have had mine for about 5 years....

It is the best shooting and accurate ( for me) handgun I have............

I carried one for a few years on duty back in the day - great firearm.  I had to replace the rear site a few times, but other than that it proved to be a fantastic revolver.

Bought one for my wife close to 10 yrs. ago. Built like a tank, solid problem free revolver- Never touched the guts except to install a spring kit. Afterward the action rivaled any 686 I've ever handled.

I had one two or three years ago and I regret trading it off. Very good revolver, and plenty accurate.

Ya can't hurt 'em. All Rugers have a lifetime warranty, so even if you have a problem they will repair it free. Hard to go wrong. Some pretty good Ruger info can be found here.

mine worked good but one time i put about 200 rounds through it and it got all fouled up, i was kinda dissapointed because although i would never need to put 200 rounds through it, i thought it should be tougher than that.

No problems with my GP100.  I've had it about 2 years.

Even thought I don't personally have a GP100, I've shot a friend's, and the factory gripes are probably the most comfortable of any of the big gun manufacturers

Excellent wheelgun. Solid and very dependable. Ruger has outstanding customer service.
It's not as refined as a S&W 586, but it'll handle any .357 load and do it for years.
ETA: the trigger pull is a little long for me, but it is normally better than a Taurus of the same size.

Cmon!!! 200 rds thru a revolver is alot of smoke! The only reason she gummed up is because of the tight machine tollerances.

Ruger revolvers are fine. I would not mind owning one.

But I prefer Smith and Wesson. May I recommend a good 686 instead?

I have both, a 686 & a GP100. I'll trade the 686 for another GP any day. The 686 looks a little more traditional, whatever that means, but I think that's just because most people have seen more S&Ws that GPs. My GP makes the 686 look like the cookie cutter gun it really is.

I've got that same gun, a stainless 4" barrel. I LOVE it!!! Accurate, reliable, rugged as all get-out. I honestly think you could drive a tank over it or shoot .357 Maximum loads through it and it would come back for more. Factory grips are excellent, as well.

From the factory, triggers are a little heavy and gritty. However, with some dry-firing, they smooth out pretty well. I also had some problems with burrs and small metal flakes inside the weapon from the manufacturing process. For the record, I have also had this problem with other makes of weapons besides Rugers so take it for what it's worth. Some cleaning, SLIGHT polishing and quite a bit of dry-firing and the trigger's pretty good.

Ruger's politics aside, I do have a problem with Ruger's parts policies. Some parts, trigger and hammer come immediately to mind, Ruger won't sell to anyone, supposedly. If you have problems with these parts, you HAVE to ship the gun to Ruger for repairs. I haven't looked to see exactly what parts Ruger won't sell or if they are available anywhere else, factory or aftermarket. I do know the trigger and hammer are exclusive Ruger parts. I understand they have a liability issue if someone buys these parts, modifies them and then sues Ruger for an AD. However, gun parts are sold everyday without apparent issue and Ruger won't sell them. Kinda reminds me of the whole hi-cap Mini-14 mag thing.

If you can buy the gun used, go for it! You won't be disappointed. If you're buying it new, I'd have to think about it. I'd probably still buy one but I'd have to think about it.

Edited to add: My wife bought mine for me brand new about 2 years ago. Also, I do have to say, if the PD I worked for allowed us to carry 125gr or better .357 ammo instead of .38+P, I would qualify with the GP100 so I could carry it. I can't think of any better praise for the weapon than that.

Thanks, all for the advice. As usual, it's great to be able to get the knowledge present on this site. You reinforce my opinion of the GP100, and I appreciate the more recent purchasers opinions. bub75, the parts policy is a potential problem, although the Ruger seems to be so robust it might not be a big factor. I might try some of the catalogs to see what they might carry. I have or am purchasing as complete a set of parts as I can for my AR15 and Benelli. Just a thing with me.

Well, I think I'm going to get one. It's about 5 months old, pristine, and I LIKE the way it feels. Guy wants 375.00, but will throw in a box or so of shells and some cleaning stuff- brushes, etc.

And bub75, here is a link for Ruger parts for the gp100

Takes care of that. Thanks again for everyones input.

Good deal! Thanks! I keep trying to remember to look for parts and keep forgetting about it. I figured someone, somewhere sold them. And I agree, they will probably NEVER be needed. The weapon, like all Ruger weapons, is so overengineered it's a friggin' tank!

Oh, and that's a decent but not great price if it's in excellent to like-new condition. My wife bought mine at the local Gander Mountain and, IIRC, it was $425.00 or thereabouts, tax and NICS check, out-the-door. Of course, there won't be any paper trail back to you, either, which is a good thing and maybe worth a few more bucks.
