It has always been my dream to move to Alaska. I love the mountains, snow and outdoors. For those of you who live up there, tell me about the pros and cons of living in Alaska.

thanks.

Go find a 1 hour film called "Alone in the wilderness"
Story about a guy named Dick Proeneke....went up there, built a cabin, lived alone for 35 years.

Awesome story....amazing stuff.

Better have a job offer - still true to some extent, but not as bad as in 1987.  What can you do for work?

Pros - conservative state, never heard of gun control.  Hunting and fishing paradise.

Cons - expensive, food and housing.  Jobs often pay little.  Have to know someone to get a decent job.  Cold winters in the interior.

couple of these have been mentioned before, but oh well

Pros:  Free money.  Good political climbate.  No permit required for CCW.  Mild Winters in Southeast.  Beautiful.  Endless outdoor activities.  Whenever you have to show your ID in the lower 48, people go, "Oohh, Alaska."  That is often quickly followed by, "I know somebody in Anchorage."

Cons: Cost of living.  Bad weather can last for months on end (thought most locals don't mind).  Cost of living.  Limited travel options.

Brian

ETA:  Bugs and the long/short/cold/hot day issues are mild in southeast AK.

We bought a cabin in Alaska and plan on moving there when I retire in a few years, so I have been checking it out.  More than the cold in the winter, locals complain about it being dark for so long each day!

The beauty is awsome.  The trash heaps about make you cry.

There is about a 10 to 15% premium (extra expense) for lots of stuff you buy.

The drives are wonderful.  A lot of the drivers are awful!

Very little to no property regulations...it's yours and you can do what you want.  So can your neighbor.  Good and bad.

Many times they'll ask "Do you know so and so?", and I will.

I second the recommendation of "Alone in the Wilderness".  It is amazing to see this guy build his cabin.  The joints and everything else are works of art!

There is a book, "One Man's wilderness" that explains more of the everyday life from his writtings in his journals.  The book is better about his live, the video is better about building the cabin.

There is another video that has some interviews with Mr. Proenneke when he was in his 70's.  It's called "Alaska silence & solitude".  It has some interesting tid bits in it, but I'm not sure it's worth the money.

When I ordered the DVD's and book they told me Mr. Proenneke passed away about a year and a half ago.

+1, and if you do find one, chances are she will be bi-polar or psychotic, or both.

OH MY GOD!!

I was just telling me wife last week that I want to move there.  We took an Alaskan cruise for our honeymoon.  We went to Anchorage, Fairbanks, Telkeetna, Seward.  I have wanted to move their ever since.  She has a real problem with moving 4,000 miles from her family.  Damnit

I have thought about moving up there too. Got a friend that moved to Fairbanks a few years ago. He loves it.

Any IT/computer related jobs up there? I keep thinking there cant be many computer geeks that could handle the enviroment. LOL

The food sucks. It's all imported expensive and not fresh. Can't speak for those who kill their own though. Takes forever to drive anywhere. Was cool to visit but, I could never live there. I will however go back again.

I drove there twice from Chicago. Only drove back once. Flew home the second time. So I guess I can say that I drove the Alaskan highway...twice damn it!!! (from a bumper sticker). My best trip though was on the Alaska Marine Highway ferry system....best 3 days i ever had. I'll be quiet now b4 I give anyone any more ideas. Like they told me when I was up there...Alaska is big, cold, and rainy, now go home and tell your friends.................I love that place.

Or she moved up there for somebody else and is on the rebound looking to get back to civilization.

Pro's- Beauty, no anti-gun bullshit for the most part, good hunting and fishing.

Con's- HIGH cost of living $$$$$$$$$$$, everything is higher, not a lot of jobs, loooooooooooong winters, crappy built homes, bloodsucking real estate agents and developers have a monopoly on all developments in Anchorage and surrounding areas. Making at least 25% profit per home.

Stay in Texas, you will be much better off. I am eventually leaving here.

The cost of shipping is high. Forget about having ammo shipped up if you don't have a freight account. Winter is a good time to reload...

Yeah, the cheapest I can find a case of Wolf is 125.00 and that is in Anchorage where the cost of living is the cheapest.

Lots of stuff cant be shipped up here. All ammo has to come up by ship. If you want to save money on ammo, you have to order it by the pallet.

I am so ready to go back to the South.

Can I have your job when you leave?

What do you do?  (Hopefully your not the "I clean your sewer guy".)
