Anyone listen teo the Old Band DIO? I just got the "Best of DIO" CD Cannot get HOLY DIVER or the Last in Line out of my melon....damn I'm getting OLD |
|
He is a short bastard! My friend met him at a signing before a show a few years ago and to this day I see the photos of them standing there and laugh. We went to the show nad I swear the other members of the band are not allowed to come forward on the stage as it would show how short RJD is. And yes, Old Dio rocks! CH |
| BEST DIO SONG EVER??? Well in 1981, Dio Joined this obscure metal band called 'Black sabbath'. Thay released a song called "the Mob rules" and an album of the same name. [/comic book guy] Best song ever! [/comic book guy] This song never seemed to get the credit it deserved, but it was in the movie 'heavy metal'. After two albums with Sabbath, he went to his solo career and produced such albums as holy diver etc. |
|
His first band was Elf. Nmot that great. then we sang for Ritchie Blackmoores Rainbow (Deep Purples Guitarist) Awesome band when he had Dio. Then a couple albums with Sabath, Heaven and HEll being the best. then solo. I think his best was when he was with Rainbow. |

RJD is a short lead singer but other notable short lead singers from the Heavy Metal era are: Killer Dwarfs lead singer Accept lead singer...I think he's German and first name was Udo? Warlock lead singer...Doro Pesch was a tiny German hottie that could WAIL! Makes me want to go back and start watching my Head Bangers Ball VCR tapes again, somewhere I've got about 30 of them with 6 hours on each dating from the very first show that started it all about Christmas of '86...Dee Snider's Top 20 Heavy Metal videos of All Time. I've got about 400 CD's of Heavy Metal bands and most of them I bought after seeing a video on HBB, most of mine are not mainstream as 20 years from now I can buy AC/DC, Aerosmity, Metallica, Van Halen, etc... Instead I bought Cats N Boots, Killer Dwarfs, Savatage, Keel, House of Lords, Kingdom Come, Lillian Axe, Giuffria, Smashed Gladys, Wasp, Y & T, XYZ, Zebra, Black N Blue, Michael Schenker Group, McCauley Schenker Group, Kane Roberts, Lizzy Borden, Dream Theater, Impelliteri, Overkill, Axe, Steelheart, King Crimson, EZO, Heavy Pettin, Angel, Danzig, Cacaphony, Jason Becker, Wildside, Crimson and Glory...OOPS sorry for the rant as I like talking about various Heavy Metal bands. |
+2. Purists may disagree, but IMHO "Mob Rules" was one of the best Sabbath albums ever. One of those albums you can crank front to back and not hear a crappy song. |
|
when i was with EMS we worked med support for his "last in line" tour. got to meet him and the band and party with them a bit backstage for a short time after the concert. Pretty nice guy from what little i got to talk to him. <a little strange.... but nice> mike |
No you need to burn them to DVDs and share the wealth! |
|
I saw him at a Monsters of Rock concert over in Germany while I was stationed over there, way back in 1984 (or was it 85???).........Accept, AC/DC, Dio, Van Halen.........and a few more bands were there but it's starting to get away from me now. Dio was very good and I still enjoy listening to him. ![]() vmax84 |

When ELF first started out, they played all over upstate NY. I saw them at a dance at my high school. Ronnie played bass IIRC. The guitarist was the same height as Dio. That was around 1972 or so. Older guys in town remembered Ronnie from the days when he was doing stuff associated with Dean Martin, Bobby Darin and 60s R&B and Rock groups. This site has MP3s of some of those tunes - I Left My Heart in San Francisco, Ooh Poo Pah Doo, etc. www.dimwhit.com/dio/mp3.html |
yea the really weird thing was he was kinda talking in rymes like the lyrics of his songs. Course he was blitzed out of his skull while we were there
|
Udo Dirkschneider as I recall...
I'm right there with you. I have some stuff that I now recognize as crap, but I also found a lot of good music. Black and Blue and Crimson Glory are two that still stand out as pretty good. Aside the ones you mentioned, others worthy of note are Kick Axe, Icon, Manowar, Dirty Looks, to name a few. |
| Ken I've got the bands you noted as well except for Icon as I've never heard of them. I wish I was home and could look at the rack to remember some of the other bands. I keep mine in alphabetical order and that helps out a lot in trying to keep everything organized. Glad to hear someone else has heard those bands! |
Probably my favorite Dio song...
Absolutely my favorite of his with Sabbath, off my very favorite Soundtrack Album of all time... ![]() Oh come on Close the city and tell the people That something's coming to call Death and darkness are rushing forward To take a bite from the wall, oh You've nothing to say They're breaking away If you listen to fools The mob rules The mob rules Kill the spirit and you'll be blinded The end is always the same Play with fire you burn your fingers And lose your hold of the flame, oh It's over, it's done The end is begun If you listen to fools The mob rules You've nothing to say Oh, they're breaking away If you listen to fools Break the circle and stop the movement The wheel is thrown to the ground Just remember it might start rolling And take you right back around You're all fools, fools, fools, fools The mob rules |

Dio has rocked for a long, long time, Now it's time for him to pass the torch. He has songs of wildebeests and angels, He has soared on the wings of a demon. It's time to pass the torch, You're too old to rock, no more rockin' for you. We're takin' you to a home, But we will sing a song about you. And we will make sure that you're very well taken care of. You'll tell us secrets that you've learned. Raow! Your sauce will mix with ours, And we'll make a good goulash baby. Dio, time to go! You must give your cape and scepter to me. And a smaller one for KG. Go! Go! Dio! Dio! |
|
Hardshell that is a GREAT soundtrack! I need to pick it up on CD in fact... I don't even know where my Heavy Metal tape is... I do have "The Mob Rules" on MP3 though, what a great tune that is. I had it on my pre-hockey game mix disc to get a proper mean-on for motivation. ![]() BTW You guys who didn't get what I originally posted? That was a hilarious song by Tenacious D (Before I saw how crude the rest of the music was... "Dio" is a great tune though) Edit: Burley gets it! |
From Amazon.com, edited for crudeness.
(edit 'cause my board code skeelz are not l337 |
| I was not around for the Dio era(at least not old enough), but I've really been on it for a while now. Of course the great majority of my music collection is Dio, Iron Maiden, and Megadeth, but I'm even throwing in a little Motorhead. As far as Dio songs, the obscure one that's really hanging onto me right now is One More for the Road. |
You need to add/listen to some Blue Oyster Cult - not just the 3-4 songs that got airplay, but a good sampling of their extensive 30+ year catalog (they're still touring/recording today!) Trust me... you'll thank me later. (Ducks head and waits for all the smart-aleck COWBELL comments...)

That ain't crude, that's humor. And a fucking rocking album. |

Okay, I'll share. I worked as a music store guy in 1988 thru 1992 or so. We were the Pro Audio shop in Reno. Starsound Audio. I was the rental dept manager. I did lighting and sound work on the side and worked the store 9a - 6p Mon - Sat. Tough schedule. I worked or played 3 to six nights a week. Got to see or work with a whole bunch of stars. I did a small radio stint with 96 Rock as well. I had my sights set on a music career and wanted to be The Next Big Thing. I played guitar and had a massive system. Ronnie came to town to do the LP "Lock Up the Wolves" at Granny's studio. It's where Whitesnake did much of "Slip of the Tongue" as well as many other bands. I had sent a demo tape to Lou Graham of Foreigner when he was doing the solo thing. Never heard anything back. RJD dropped by the shop and walked into my section. I knew who he was and I intro'd myself and sang praises to his work. We talked about other mutual friends or people we knew. We talked about Viv Campbell giving up his slot at Dio to play with Whitesnake and then his move to work with a garage band (Riverdogs). This was way before moving to Def Leppard. I mentioned my tape to Lou and never hearing back. Ronnie told me he would call his friend Lou, and put in a good word for me. WOW! Ronnie was in town for almost a month and he stopped by the shop or I'd catch him at the local rock bar from time to time. Great guy. Several weeks after he left town, I got a call from A&M records to come out to Burbank to audition for Lou Graham. I told them about my gear and logistics for moving it. I had maybe 500 - 800 pounds of gear. 2 full amp stacks, road cases for each, 24 space rack for outboard gear, midi pedal board, 4 guitars with Anvil flight cases, stands, cables, etc. They had a ticket waiting for me and all my gear. Had a van for the weekend at my disposal - the whole works. I played Foreigner songs with Lou belting them out all weekend. We played some of his solo stuff as well. It was great. I felt as if we really connected but I never got the call back. They went with Steven Van Zandt. Steven left the tour a few months into it to play with Ringo Star. They should have went with me. I'd have stayed. Ronnie's management company called me at Starsound to see how it all went later on. He was concerned about it. Ronnie James Dio is truly a wonderful person. I still listen to his music today. I have lots of stories about the rock side of show business. I had a hell of a time with Whitesnake and Quiet Riot. Dottie West could party like a high school chick when she was 66. Those were the times. |
"Mob Rules".... well.... it rules. I wore that cassette out in high school. My wife and I saw RJD in a club about a year ago - damned good show. |
|
I've got the Rainbow studio album somewhere in my vaults which is IIRC ELF w/Richie Blackmore running the show. "Man on the Silver Mountain" was the standout tune. I thought they had a good bassist, a guy named Craig Gruber. Nice LP. Haven't heard it in about 25 years, though. The next time I remember hearing RJD singing was on a Pontiac Fiero commercial in the 1980s. |
