It is well known to most Public School educated individuals that the term "American" used to loosely describe a US Citizen is not technically correct, and while I am a self confessed grammar Nazi; I have decided to give this one a “pass”. The logic being that we are the only country in the Americas of any import—all of the other corrupt, third-world, ungrateful or pacifist nations can shove off! Thoughts? |

Technically, speaking I would suppose we are North Americans. Who knows... might keep a Brazilian from getting pissed off. However, the general use of the term Americans to mean us, ie Citizens of The United States of America. Probably comes from the latter part of our formal name. Implying of course that there is only one America. |
It seems that the World at large agrees . . . if you say you are an American then it is presumed that you are a citizen of the US, not of Mexcio or Canada, etc. (not that Canada is 3rd world, but you get the idea). |

We were the first country in the americas to call our nation America (the United States of America) so internationaly we have DIBS. If this pisses of Canada or anyone else then all the sweeter. ![]() Besides we were called Americans way before we were even a nation. Britian France Spain etc... all refered to us as the Americans and they did'nt mean anyone from any of the americas. By not calling the US "america" would have been almost stupid. |
