Last weekend a movie in Blockbuster caught my eye. It was called “To End All Wars”, and had Kiefer Sutherland in it. I took a chance on it and after watching it was glad I did. The movie is set in Thailand with Allied POWs building a railroad for the Japanese. It is based on a book written by one of the POWs that was there in which he wrote of his experiences. This movie is not just a retelling of “The Bridge On The River Kwai.” It has a very different focus. There are HUGE themes of personal sacrifice, camaraderie in the face of adversity, forgiveness, and laying down one’s life for his brother. If you get the disk make sure you check out the special features too. The portion where the main character is reunited with the Japanese interpreter from the camp is pretty powerful. |
