What's been your general experience with reconditioned tools? I'm looking to pick up a pneumatic finish nailer and new ones go for roughly $200 while recon'd ones are going for roughly 75% the cost of a new tool.
I've bought a couple of Ingersoll-Rand factory-refurbished air tools - a 3/8" ratchet and a 1/2" impact wrench. The place I got them was a stocking dealer for I-R and offered a 7-day NQA exchange policy, plus the stuff came with some factory warranty. Never had a problem with either, and they run just fine. By the way, 75% of new sounds a little steepish to me, but I have no idea about the nailer market. I think the I-R stuff I bought was about half of new price.
I have been buying reconditioned tools from Tool Crib for about three years now and I have never had a bad experience with them yet. The reconditioned Porter-Cable and Dewalt tools have the same warranty as new tools. I have purchased Dewalt cordless drills, recipicating saw, a sliding miter saw and Porter Cable framing and finishing air nailer and a random orbital sander all of the tools looked new and I have not had any problems with them. A guy I talked to at Tool Crib told me that allot of the tools are returned after someone ordered them for a weekend project and then returns them when the job is done. So they are sent back to the factory looked at and then returned to be sold as reconditioned.
