I met him a few times when driving through Hendersonville, Tn. He lived in town and you could see him driving around town all the time.
Great man to talk to face to face. He would talk to you like he knew you his entire life.

You need to get "Live at San Quenton" or "Live at Folsom Prison".That's Johnny at his best.

I've always liked When The Man Comes Around, Streets of Laredo (which is far older than Cash), and Ring of Fire. I'm only just getting interested in his music as a whole though.

The man did love his Colt pistols.

you cannot listen to his songs and not be a fan.  The video to hurt is very powerful.  Personal favorite would be "long black veil"  Which actually has no instruments of any kind playing, just his voice.

I like the standard hits:

I've been everywhere
Folsom Prison Blues
Ring of Fire
I walk a line
When the man comes around

He also did a sweet cover of Rusty Cage by Soundgarden.

I never used to really like country music, but Cash was the guy that started me out. I have Live at Folsom, one of his box sets and another disc or two of his stuff.

I liked the fact that most of his tunes are almost like Blues tunes. Johnny Cash country music was just "country blues" IMHO.

Good stuff.

All the American series, plus the Columbia boxed set & Live At San Quentin.  My "Johnny flipping the bird" t-shirt has a treasured spot in my wardrobe.

I'm a huge fan. You'll find fans everywhere. Redneck bars, truckstops, punk rock clubs, diners, art galleries, those are a few places I've heard the man in black come on the juke. And nobody but nobody has a bitch.
F'n miss him. Never got to see him live.

That should be a surprise to no one.

The base for country music is blues, mountain music, and western music.

The base for bluegrass is black rhythm and mountain melody.

Delia, oh. Delia
Delia all my life
If I hadn't shot poor Delia
I'd have had her for my wife
Delia's gone, one more round
Delia's gone

I went up to Memphis
And I met Delia there
Found her in her parlor
And I tied to her chair
Delia's gone, one more round
Delia's gone

She was low and trifiling
And she was cold and mean
Kind of evil make me want to
Grab my sub machine
Delia's gone, one more round
Delia's gone

First time I shot her
I shot her in the side
Hard to watch her suffer
But with the second shot she died
Delia's gone, one more round
Delia's gone

But jailer, oh, jailer
Jailer, I can't sleep
'Cause all around my bedside
I hear the patter of Delia's feet
Delia's gone, one more round
Delia's gone

So if your woman's devlish
You can let her run
Or you can bring her down and do her
Like Delia got done
Delia's gone, one more round
Delia's gone

That man was a musical genius.

One of my favorite Cash songs is the Ballad of Ira Hayes.

And I heard, as it were, the noise of thunder: One of the four beasts saying: "Come and see." And I saw. And behold, a white horse.

There's a man goin' 'round takin' names. An' he decides who to free and who to blame. Everybody won't be treated all the same. There'll be a golden ladder reaching down. When the man comes around.

The hairs on your arm will stand up. At the terror in each sip and in each sup. For you partake of that last offered cup, Or disappear into the potter's ground. When the man comes around.

Hear the trumpets, hear the pipers. One hundred million angels singin'. Multitudes are marching to the big kettle drum. Voices callin', voices cryin'. Some are born an' some are dyin'. It's Alpha's and Omega's Kingdom come.

And the whirlwind is in the thorn tree. The virgins are all trimming their wicks. The whirlwind is in the thorn tree. It's hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

Till Armageddon, no Shalam, no Shalom. Then the father hen will call his chickens home. The wise men will bow down before the throne. And at his feet they'll cast their golden crown. When the man comes around.

Whoever is unjust, let him be unjust still. Whoever is righteous, let him be righteous still. Whoever is filthy, let him be filthy still. Listen to the words long written down, When the man comes around.

Hear the trumpets, hear the pipers. One hundred million angels singin'. Multitudes are marchin' to the big kettle drum.

In measured hundredweight and penny pound. When the man comes around.

And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts, And I looked and behold: a pale horse. And his name, that sat on him, was Death. And Hell followed with him.

"There'll never be another Redheaded Stranger, or Man In Black and Folsom Prison Blue."

Remember the Alamo, and God Bless Texas...

HUGE Cash fan here, his best music came towards the end IMO, and probably won't ever be as commercially succesful as it should be.....I remember coming home from work one night and hearing on the radio that June had passed and I said to myself how it probably wouldn't be long before Johnny left us as well I also remember completely mesmerized when VH1 had him and Willie on the same stage.

It's a 60,61,62...

I remember the first time I heard his version of Rusty Cage, it was on college radio. He totally blew soundgarden away. Same with Hurt.

Cash was the first Artist I could identify. I've had Ring of Fire since before I can remember. I remember playing it on my dad's turntable. I still have it. But no 'table.

In the late 80's I saw him play at an outdoor concert. It was a clear night and a full moon. He stopped mid-set and we all howled at the moon.

Ring of Fire

You can't classify his music as Country and that is why everyone can find at least one of his songs that they enjoy.
