I am a network admin.  It is not easy to share files between XP in 98.  It is possible but deffinetly not easy.

You will need to make sure file and printer sharing is turned on and you have an account that the Windows 98 computer can log in to on on the XP machine.

Both machine need to have compatible IP address ranges.  Make sure the TCP/IP protocol is installed for the ethernet adaptor in the Windows 98 machine. Set them to obtain an IP address automatically they should then default both to a private IP address check the IP address to make sure they are not the same.

Make sure they are set to use the same workgroup.

It is easy if you know exactly what you are doing but a pain in the ass for a novice.

What you explained is exactly the same as between 2 XP computers.

Networking between XP computers is much easier.  Windows 98 machines get prompted for a password when try to access a folder/file on a XP machine.
