I hate these things

www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/science/01/31/alaska.volcanoes.reut/index.html

The other stirring volcano is Mount Spurr, an 11,070-foot peak about 80 miles west of Anchorage.

Small earthquakes beneath Spurr began last summer have intensified over the last week or so, Eichelberger said. The activity has included an emission of heat that has created a lake from some of the snow and ice near the summit, he said.

Spurr last erupted in 1992, but that and other recorded eruptions came from a cone on the south flank of the mountain, slightly below the summit. The current activity is directly beneath the summit, which has not erupted for 5,000 years, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory.

I hope that doesn't mean what I think it means, i.e., a Mt St Helens style eruption.

Sounds like you're going to find out why Alaska is so furtile for growing plants.

Yep, we'll all be pretty much totally screwed. Especially those of us in North America.
It will go up, it is just a matter of time. I don't think anyone has an even halfway reasonable plan to avert that disaster, even if they knew when it was going to happen.

I dont think there will ever be a way to avert it, It may be possible to plan for some people surviving, and what to do about long term survival.

Of course no one is even working on a plan.....just hoping it dont happen anytime soon.

At least word is getting out about this thing, not that it really does any good.

It's a sobering thought to realize that unless we develop some sort of technology as yet undreamed of that civilization in North America will, without any shadow of a doubt, be destroyed at some indefinite time in the future or at the minimum reduced to starvation.  It will be a catastrophe of global proportions, akin to a major asteroid strike according to some calculations.  No one really knows how bad it will be when it finally goes.  One can hope it's been overrated, but...

Regardless, with this thing lurking under Yellowstone this gives us the perfect excuse to invade Australia...as if all the purdy girls and nice beaches weren't enough reason.

"Sorry mate, but we've got some unpleasantness up North America way so we'll be taking this continent if you don't mind.  Right.  Now about those girls..."

NANO, it will be are fix for everything.

I got nothing to worry about. I will just become a tribal war lord.

I have wanted to run around in the nude for a while now. Maybe when that happens I won't have to worry about any one seeing my hairy butt.

Read it here:  vulcan.wr.usgs.gov/Volcanoes/Yellowstone/description_yellowstone.html

You might wish to consider a geology class too...

Bottom line...if the caldera blows...all life within several hundreds of miles will end.  The hundreds of cubic miles of debris thrown up into the upper atmosphere will start a "nuclear-style" winter reducing the earth's overall temp and causing massive damage worldwide.

We can't forget the huge caldera along the California-Nevada border too:  Mammoth.  It is number two to Yellowstone...but just as dangerous if it should blow.

[Marvin the Martian] Oh yes...It will be an earth shattering boom...yes indeed.[\Marvin the Martian]

Super huge volcano under Yellowstone will explode some time. Mass catastrophy will ensue. (condensed version)

Here is an easy comparison in explosive power.

Mt St. Helens = grenade ( about 2 ounces of TNT )
Yellowstone = Tzar Bomba (57 Megatons)
