My HP Pavilion did not come with any type of XP backup disks, manual said something about a backup copy was partitioned on the hard drive.

This computer is really bogged down with all kinds of crap, would like a wipe and new install of XP to start over, but no discs.

The other option I thought would be system restore but restore points only go back as far as Oct. why is there not one right about the time we bought the computer?

I am sure it (restore points)  has to do with hard drive space.  Buy a newer, bigger harddrive, buy a new and discounted XP.  This may be much cheaper than the aggravation.

Call HP and complain. New computers are not coming with restore disks simply because MS has some backed into a corner about people using the disks to pirate windows. Call up HP and try to get restore disks. Try telling them that when you turn on the computer it says "Please insert system disk" and does not go any further.

it WOULD be nice if XP had a full restore option instead of those checkpoints.......    that would have been much better for me than to dig through a bunch of disks.

They sometimes do a Ghost to the HD, Id suggest getting a copy of windows and just reinstalling.

Im not sure how they ship them now, alot used to come with a set of CDs Im not sure why they stopped that.

You should be able to do what you want with the files on the backup copy partition... if they have not been deleted.

Usually you are required to hit a key at startup that will take you to a screen the gives you the option to do a destructive reinstall. Look in the manual or at the HP web site instructions should be there.

A Windows restore point will not help because once your computer is infected with whatever there is a good chance the restore points have include the infections in the restore point. When you get infected with a virus, malware or bad spyware the first thing you should do is turn of Windows XP system restore.

There should be a program that came with your PC to MAKE
backup disks.

You can burn them on CDs.

Then you can "restore " your PC to the original condition it was from the factory.

(of course you will need to copy the other files you want to save also )

i have a hp with xp.my hard drive is partion with the factory settings.
on restart of your computer
at the hp logo screen press f10 system recovery(or look in lower right corner of your screen to see if yours is different) it takes a couple of minutes to see the instructions.then follow the instructions when the appear.
it will wipe your computer clean and you will have to do all the updates and reinstall any of your programs you installed
BACKUP ANYTHING YOU WANT TO SAVE.
takes a couple hrs to do.
