Do they really work as easy as they claim or are they meant only for real professionals?

A rake is just as fast and does not have the annoying buzzing.

They work best on old worn locks.

my buddy is a professional locksmith and he says they suck.  he can pick through about any standard config lock with a pick gun and a tension wrench.  He had one at his old shop, I tried it and it didnt do anything for me at all.  I say get a set of picks and a bunch of deadbolts to practice on, the electrics arent worth the cost

I got rather good with a rake when I first started with rental properties.  I would assume I have gotten rusty since then.  It was fun though.

once, years ago, my roommate's girl friend locked her self out of her apartment. For some reason I was there, I think maybe I had given her a ride home from somewhere and we didn't know she didn't have her keys until we got there. Anyway, locksmith showed up and picked the lock in literally 5-10 seconds. Pretty sure he just raked it. He was as fast or faster as the fake lock picking that actors do in tv shows

Made her feel really good about her security then, didn't it?

Truely a rake would be just as fast.

it's been a few years so I don't remember for sure, but I think he just had a pick to rake with and something to apply turning pressure with.
He did spray some graphite into it first

So is there any chance if I were to buy a lockpicking kit and some padlocks I could learn how to pick them in a reasonable amount of time?

I can pick any of th elocks in my apt complex in under 5 seconds with a standard half-diamond and twisted tension wrench.  Of course there are some locks out there that I've tackled and could never pick.....win some, hit others with a ram :)

i know some people prefer to rake or pick with a set vs an electric rig.  Takes the fun out of it!!

EX locksmith here:

Apt complex locks are more than twice as easy to pick due to the dual pins used for the master key system. You should be able to pick an apt complex lock btw 5 seconds to 1 min depending on exp or complete lack thereof.

Not all apartments use a Master key system.....atleast around here they dont.
