When it says that a specific model has a runtime of 60 minutes, does that mean that the lamp dies or the batteries die after an hour?

Batteries die.  They give some warning, then just go.

Still, you can use them for less demanding applications.

For those of you interested in a good alternative to the SureFires, take a look at the Elektro-Lumens lights.  I bought an XM-3 for myself for Christmas and think very highly of it.  It's very heavy duty aluminum, appears to be tough as nails, is a LED, uses two AA batteries, and is brighter than the basic 60 lumen SureFires.

Check out:  XM-3

ETA:  I have no financial or other interest in this product, other than to see the company continue to come up with great flashlights.

the thing about surfire/lithium batteries is that when they die they are dead very quickly

Or check out the Streamlight twin task. It has  LED and xenon bulbs. The LED will run even after the xenon bulb won't light.

And have a 10 year shelf life.

One day I went to use my SureFire and it was dead.  No sign of fading, so beware.
