I have been trying to use Internet explorer on my computer for the last month and it wont let me. It brings up the Page Cannot be displayed screen. I tried to update but I have all current. I am running Norton firewall also. Any suggestions? Thanks |
![]() If Internet Exploder stopped working (i.e. it was working and stopped without you changing anything), you might have gotten some spyware/malware that screwed up your DNS settings or something else in the IE configuration. Check for spyware with AdAware, Spybot S&D, etc. |
tabs are built into the windows OS alt-tab |
What are you using now? |
AOL i would just rather use IE |
Are you on dialup or broadband? Is aol your only ISP? What operating system are you running? |
Dialup aol |
|
I'll bet AOHell is your ISP - Do you have any other internet service provider accounts? Like Earthlink, comcast, adelphia, whatever? Edited: You can't get on because you don't have any other service provider. If you pay AOL to get internet access, you can't use Internet Explorer. |
|
We just went through this with my father-in-law We figured out that for what he pays AOL and the phone company for the second phone line every month, he could get broadband cable for the same price. Wicked fast, and without all the headaches of AOL. Check with your cable TV provider, or your phone service provider if you don't have cable. You can do much better. |
![]() You can use IE after you log into AOL. |
Obviously not a user of Mozilla Firefox. The Alt+Tab you are referring to are Hot Keys in Windows that list open applications in Windows Explorer, not IE as you seem to suggest. Firefox allows you to 'Tab' separate web pages allowing one to be accessed while another downloads- a capability beyond IE. And yes, I do use other software for adware and spyware, but those incidents have gone down dramatically since making the switch. With all of this in mind, you are welcome to take your Cluepon back, because you need it more than I do. |
I'm assuming that once you dial up with the AOL software and minimize that window that IE still doesn't work. GO to start button ---> Run and type 'cmd' (without the quotes). That will open a command prompt. At the command prompt, type 'ipconfig' (w/o the quotes) and post the output . Also at the command prompt type 'ping 64.223.167.104' let us know what it says. Then, still at the command prompt, type 'ping www.google.com' and post the results. These 3 tests will let us know that you are getting a proper IP address from AOL (1). That you have tcp connectivity (2) and that your DNS is working (3). |
the tabs also take up valuable screen space. its a stupid gimmic. run multiple copies of IE, and in XP it will "TAB" them for you in the taskbar, saving screen space. |
hahha, the cluepon is for Red_Beard, not you Cobb. Sorry for the confusion. He's the one that doesn't know what a tab is. I'm intimately familiar with firefox's tab features. The tab feature, and clicking links with the mouse wheel to open them in a new tab make it hard to browse the web with anything else
|
Didn't know that! See, AOL made me stupid! Even talking about it brought my IQ down 10 points, and I can't afford to give up any more since that *tequila* thing... ![]() Yeah, that's it. |
IE running in windows can handle multiple window browsing just fine alt-tab hotkey switches between windows just fine |
you can configure your mouse to open clicks in IE in a new window (or hold shift and hit click) |
GHEY! |
convincing argument, dipshit |
What you said used to be true; AOL screwed up the windows TCP/IP stack so you couldn't use any non-AOL application while connected. In the past couple of years, they've come into the 1990's.
|
No, the mistake is mine and so is the apology to you. Thanks for helping me learn something! |
Dayummmm.... toolbars from hell!
|
Nah, as long as you are logged onto AOL, your IE should work. I use AOL for business travel all over the country. Tj |
What was the subject again? So who can give us the step-by-step instructions, here? |
properly maintained IE is superior. if you own a car and crash it into a lightpole it is your fault not the car... |
|
ditch that piece of shit firewall. i just charge a lady $115.00 to manually uninstall a corrupt norton internet security program that was preventing her from accessing the internet... norton products have serious bugs in them. their virus program is the best... as long as it dosen't get corrupted... get a router (hardware firewall) and run SP2 for xp if you need a software firewall. there is a utility you can find on the internet "winsock fix" that may repair your problem. |
When IE opens a link I middle click on without stealing my screen focus, doesn't take down or hardlock my OS when it crashes, and is more secure than Mozilla, I'll consider switching back. Until then, IE can suck off. I only use it for Windows Update at home, and only a few IE only web pages at work. I have v0.7 of Firebird in zip form, and use that everywhere I go at work. |

Internet Explorer is THE best browser avaliable. End of story. The only thing that sucks about it, is that it's so popular that all the spyware writers target it. If firefox reached anywhere IE's popularity, it would go down in flames within seconds. Personally, before my most recent format, my IE was so fucked up from spyware that I was forced to use Firefox for months. But don't kid yourself: Firefox, and most other aftermarket browsers are just dolled up varieties of Netscape, and Netscape is pathetic!!! Use Spybot Search&Destroy and a little common sense BEFORE you get infected, and IE will be your friend. |
