Last Guard unit preparing for battle
Friday, January 14, 2005
THE BAY CITY TIMES
GRAYLING -- Two Saginaw County soldiers -- one from Saginaw, the other from Hemlock -- are in the last of five National Guard units available for duty at Camp Grayling to serve in Iraq or Kuwait.

The Pentagon has called up the members of the 1071st Maintenance Co. They were undergoing physicals and updating paperwork this week at the Crawford County training facility.

National Guard officials were not immediately able to identify the pair.

The company has 246 members, and 178 of them are likely to head overseas in a few weeks to keep military equipment running, said Col. Tom Lamie, a spokesman for Camp Grayling.

The unit consists of mechanics, welders and metal fabricators, he said.

"They can rebuild engines, transmissions and weapons systems," Lamie said. "They are the only unit of this type in the state." v

believe me it ain't the last nation wide.

There is still a LARGE amount of Guard units that havn't been called up.

Mostly FA Battalions.

I'm in an Air Defense Artillery unit, and we were called up in summer 03, but quickly deactivated again.  No overseas time for me yet.

News up here is saying last Michigan guard unit.

Some of the Michigan units are on their third call-up since 2001 (they cheated by calling the 2001 call-up a federal supported state call up)

Yup.  My unit went from armor to infantry back in September.  Not going to be a heck of a lot of anything but infantry or MP's for the forseeable future.

Pretty soon they are going to have to create actual state militias to take care of the states in actual times of natural disasters.

Most states already have those.
