Many years ago an old gunsmith demonstrated to me how to determine headspace in a bolt action rifle without using an actual gauge. He would strip the bolt of the firing pin and spring, and remove the claw extractor. Placed the stripped bolt into the action and worked it to get the "feel" of just the bolt. Then he took a case, placed a small piece of scotch tape on the head of the case, put it into the action and closed the bolt on it. If there was resistance, head space was OK, if closed freely headspace probably not OK. Now the tricky part for me is I CAN NOT remember if he used a fired case, or a resized case to do this. I would think that a resized case????? If resized, was it full length and how far onto the shoulder? Just a flash back to some past experience.... Any thoughts? |
Nope... Just a Gunsmith in Southern Oregon... |
