What OS is the computer? What service pack, if applicable? How far is the computer in question from the router in question? I have a d-link router that I use off and on, a little more information and I would be glad to talk you through it. |

Okay, first thing you want to check is the wireless card in the device manager, look for any !'s or other errors. Once that's done, use the laptop to get into the router > 192.168.0.1 by default username is admin, password is blank. Either that or password is admin, username is blank. One of the two, I forget which. Anyhow, once you're in there, you need to check that the wireless is enabled correctly and that it's set to accept more than 1 wireless client. Also check to make sure there is no MAC address filter on the wireless, or if there is one, add your desktop computer's MAC address to it. Once you've determined that is okay, check the DHCP settings, make sure it's not trying to hand out only one IP address. Delete every network connection available, create a new one, select the wireless card as the device, set up connection manually, then once you've clicked through that go to the properties of the new connection, auto assign IP addresses, click advanced, add your gateway as 192.168.0.1 click okay. Also have it show your connection when it is connected, this will help you to select wireless networks and such. I know I'm rambling, but I'm flooding out every bit of information I can think of that will help you. If all of this is a bit greek to you, IM me and I can call you with my cell and talk you through it, have you up and running in 10 min or less or your money back. |

ok are both in the same 'workgroup'?? what does it say under >>sart >>control panel >>> network connections??? does your wireless connection show??? U may need to disable the NIC card for the wireless connection to work--- what does "IPCONFIG" show for the 2 machines??? ^^Type IPCONFIG from the command line prompt.... oh yeah- SP2??? >>start >>programs >>accessories >>>system tools >>> system info or does the control panel have an icon for "wireless"????? |
It does say the wep is disabled |
That's okay. You don't want to mess with enabling wep until you have everything else working. |

Wireless can be a royal pain to configure, even though the manufacturers normally set it up as "plug and Play (pray)". First things to check are the radio transmission levels on the desktop wireless NIC. Sometimes they are turned off, or set to a low transmission power. Also, check to make sure the desktop nic and wireless router are using the same frequency. I'm assuming you bought 802.11b/g devices. You need to make sure that both the router and desktop NIC are 802.11b or 802.11g (g is backwards compatable with b). If you got an 802.11a desktop NIC, it won't work. |
