So I have a firewall.  I am a computer geek but don't know much about networking.  So in general how would one open up some ports?  Now I've heard that it is different for each type of firewall.  I've never figured this out because there isn't any software for the firewall.  It's just connected inbetween the comp. and the cable modem.  So how do you access it?

Type in 192.168.1.1 You should get access to the "control panel" or admin interface. You should be able to open up ports through that interface

What make/model router?

Nope at home.  Parents wanted a firewall and it is a good safty thing.  Unfortunatly I don't know much about it.  We use it to be the router for our household network.  I have to switch computers now be back with an up date soon.
